The Bloggers With The Most To Say

Greetings 20sb Family,

I have a small conundrum. Recently, I've been getting the urge to write more about politics. Thos who read my blog know that, typically, it's a comedy/entertainment/personal blog. I don't know what has happened that I've suddenly felt the urge to write about political topics, but I do. Things like Separation of church and state, gay marriage, abortion. etc. I certainly don't want to offend my readers with differing opinions than mine, but at the same time, it's my blog and it should express my thoughts and feelings. So the ultimate question is, can a blog discuss politics and stay within a friendly, familial scope?

I appreciate your thoughts,

Geophrie

Honestly, I would be more into your blog if it had more to do with queer issues once in awhile--or really, just more often. I really liked your "get your bachelorette party out of my gay club" because you had great insight and points.

You gave me a great idea. Thank you!

I like that post, too!

I did a couple of political-based posts, around the time of the General Election...  They were so badly received I decided not to do it again!

If you can pull it off, good luck to you...  :)

definitely...you just have to be able to write about political issues without the politics.  i usually go at from a more philosophical point of view, where i leave out defining myself as a left/right wing individual and it has worked pretty well for me when i write on political sites.  you don't want to say conservatives believe A and liberals B because when you begin to generalize it's easy for people to stop listening...sound logic and reasoning is a must.  there is this seemingly largely right wing site that i've been reading and commenting on this past week, and so far it's been pretty beneficial for me to read their thoughts and arguments...it's also nice to throw in a few reasons explaining why they are wrong :)

I prefer those type of blogs, and like it when my readers debate in my the comments. I think if you have a decent readership and understand they are not always going to agree with you, and some will end up writing blog posts in your comments by way of debate, it's perfectly fine, preferable even, as far as I'm concerned.
I've been blogging since forever and  remember losing followers when I posted  a make over of Elvis Costello's Oliver's Army geared toward the Iraq war - this back in June of 2005. I lost more when I started posting about Darfur so I eventually started a separate blog for that subject, one guy said  he couldn't read me anymore because he was searching for peace of mind, and my blog wasn't giving him that, but he continues to email me every  6 months or so to this day. But I gained readers that had the same interests as I did, so in the long run it's probably better to write what you want, it all balances out.
I think that if there are issues that are really important to you, you should be able to discuss them, especially in your own blog. You can respectfully discuss politics and people who disagree will know you still value their opinion. OR you can write however you want about politics and maybe people who have vastly different opinions than you do on things that are important to you aren't the audience you're looking for. Both choices are valid, just depends on what kind of blog style you're going for.

I used to do the same thing. Social issues, politics, etc with a humorous twist on my opinions, so it worked a lot of the time. I have now flipped to a more light topic/humorous/personal blog that I feel is better received and a lot easier for more people to read.

I say do it if you have something to say, but you better write the shit out of it, because no one likes to read a political opinion that is uninformed, solely angry ranting, poorly written, or 100% one-sided. Also fact check your ass off, I got blasted on my own blog because I put something wrong.

Keeping it moderately light and putting your normal writing/humor into it can entertain people who don't even agree with the opinion you are presenting.  A lot of my extremely liberal friends who disagreed with some of my views still appreciated the comical aspect of the blog.

Hmm, that depends. My input is; If you're socially liberal, blog away, my good man! If you're socially conservative, shut up, nobody wants to read it.
Well, that's not cool. However are we supposed to embrace compromise and figure out a way for everyone to be happy. Political opinions matter whether or not you agree with them.

Some things cannot be compromised on. I could give examples, but I don't want to start a political debate in your thread.

Political opinions matter of course, as they shape society, but that doesn't mean everybody has to like hearing about them. If you're going to post political content, you are inevitably going to get some hostile responses.

There's a difference between writing about my opinion on an issue and telling everyone else they're wrong about an issue.

True not everything can be compromised. But if you don't try to compromise then you have no right force someone to agree with you.
