I'm going to Portland and Seattle this weekend. I'll be there Oct 3-10 leaving both Saturdays for travel days (I'm coming from PA so it's a long day). I'm going with a friend and we're flying into Portland and leaving out of Seattle. We have other friends to stay with in both cities but I'm wondering if we need to rent a car. We plan on taking the train to Seattle. It's only a $30 ticket and 3.5 hr ride. Yay! If we don't need to rent a car we don't want to, saving money is key. Our friends have a car, but they don't plan on hanging out with us all day because they're working and we're just visiting on vacation to explore the cities in hopes to move there. Advice on the public transportation and things we must do?
trimet is the buslines and max is the train system. there is a freezone on the max thats in and around downtown where you don't have to pay.
and of course, i can't be a book lover without mentioning you should go to powells :P you can take the max line to the library stop. then there's another train that runs adjacent to the max that takes you directly to powells.. or, just walk the few blocks down 10th until you hit burnside.
