The Bloggers With The Most To Say

Possibly a dumb question: Referring to significant other as "J" in blog?

Practically every female blogger I read who mentions a significant other refers to him as "J." There's also one "Jay." In the comments of one such blog, a commenter replied something along the lines of "Well, blah blah blah my J."

Is this some kind of secret code? I can't think of anything that J could stand for, but it has to be more than a coincidence. My fiance's name actually does start with J, which makes the situation even weirder. If it's an abbreviation or something, will someone please clue me in before I start thinking I'm in a suspense novel?

Thank you, bloggers.

The initial thing was my first thought...but a quick google search game me an answer I like better.

Slang

The word "jay" has an archaic meaning in American slang meaning an impertinent person.

The term jaywalking was coined in 1915 to label persons crossing a busy street carelessly and becoming a traffic hazard. [1] The term began to imply recklessness or impertinent behavior as the convention became established. ("jay-walker". Oxford English Dictionary. Oxford University Press. 2nd ed. 1989.).

I always wondered why it was called jaywalking! :P
Now we can assume any ex-boyfriends being refferred to as "J" often have "impertinent behavior".
when i was a kid i mixed up the phrase "naked as a jaybird" with "jaywalking".

i thought jaywalking was when people crossed the street naked.

I have an ex who is Jason and I refer to him as J.. all my bfs on my blog I refer by first letter of their name, although I dated another guy named Jason and had to call him tkd (he was a taekwondo teacher) because J was taken. I didn't know there was some other meaning to "J" --- but I just find it easier and kind of to protect the not-so-innocent not to use their name.
I usually give people nicknames in my blog, but not just one letter names. perhaps it is the first letter of someone's name? I don't think it is significant...I think it is merely coincidental.
Yes, J stands for jackass or jerkoff. Hope that helps. ;)
I just refer to people by their actual names, or by their relation to me, i.e. "coworker," "friend," etc. The whole initial thing tends to confuse me and make me not relate to the actual people. And for me, it would be really confusing, since most of my coworkers and friends have names that start with J. o_O
Jeeze... You're right... Now that I think of it, everybody's is named "J".

My husband's name does not start with a J.

And I refer to him as "Bubba".

Because when you say "bubba" you don't picture a tall, thin mysterious type - you picture a hefty bald man with prison tattoos.

Which makes me happy.
sometimes i feel like half the guys i've dated have had J names, and i definitely went for a while in college where they all had J names. it's not a code, just a pattern
