The Bloggers With The Most To Say

I was walking down the street yesterday and a girl asked me for a match to light a cigarette and I immediately had 2 thoughts.

1. Sheesh this chick isn't even comitted to her bad habbit if she carries cigarettes and no lighter.

and

B. I wonder how many times smokers ask to bum a cigarette versus getting asked.

So my question is to all you smokers out there; What would you say your give to bum ratio is? Have you given or taken more cigarettes?

I actually have only taken a cig from a friend once or twice, but only because they offered.

However, I'll often be asked for a cig or a light. To be honest, I normally say I don't have any with me... Why should I give them free cigarettes?!

Than again, I smoke cigarettes only every now and then. I prefer the hookah (shisha), my pipe (regular pipe tobacco,) cigars and mini cigars and some dip (chewing tobacco.) In that order. Odd thing is, I'm not addicted to any of them. :P
do you have your own hookah? or do you just prefer it?
I only smoke cigarettes when I'm slightly drunk, and when I can't sleep, because they make me so dizzy i pass out really quick afterwards.
We have our own hookah. It's a rather small one we bought while in Vegas and only has one hose. We plan on buying a much larger one or even starting a collection!!!
die for hookah/shisha. i wish everyone still kept them in their living rooms, a la college.
When I was a smoker I used to smoke Lucky Strike filters, but they have now since discontinued the filtered cigarettes and only offer nasty unfiltered smokes now.

But anyway, I particularly liked Lucky Strike over other brands, and pretty much hated most Camel and Marlboro Lights (which most people seemed to carry). So when bumming a cig, you have to know going into it that you're most likely going to be disappointed in what you get unless you're just a social smoker and really don't give a shit. Those are the perma-bums. They never buy their own pack because they refuse to admit that they smoke. So needless to say, I'd only bum if I was in dire need. Otherwise I tried to keep my own on hand.

You'd be amazed at how often having a lighter in your pocket is convenient and useful. It seemed like every day someone needed to borrow my lighter.

As far as giving away smokes, I was usually generous if I had more than 10 left (half a pack). Any less than that and I'd say "sorry, but it's a pain in the ass to find these cigarettes and I'm running low" which was the truth. Repeat offenders: after I've given someone 3 smokes, they're done until they give me some back. Or buy me a new pack. Because seriously cigarettes are expensive.

I've since quit. It has been several years now, since about 2006. I'll occasionally bum a smoke when I'm drunk. As I've said, they have discontinued my cigarettes, so I'll settle for anything other than Marlboro Lights. I get a lot of Parliaments these days. Not a lot.... just probably bum from the same few people, however they're usually drinking my alcohol.
Oats, i have a friend who smokes regularly from my pack without even asking. As if it's natural that i would share them with him everytime i get myself a new pack. And he would just chain smoke the whole night. I've reminded him time and time again that cigarettes are expensive, get his own and stuff.. He'd just ignore what i say and take another one.
That happens to drinks too. He never pays! WTH?
friends like that are sooooooooo annoying.
I smoke rollies so I always get asked, produce the 'backie and papers and get a 'nah, I'm alright actually mate'.

I generally don't bum ciggies although the asking for a light trick is a good one if you want to talk to someone...like a girl.
those are the best ones to bum... provided one can acquire rolling assistance! ;)
Agreed.
I use that ice breaker all the time. I'll have a lighter on me, but I'll still ask the cute girl if I can have a light, leads to conversation and sometimes you'll even randomly hit it off. Pretty skeezy thing to do when I already have a lighter, but it works.
for me sharing cigarettes is all about context. i have been in a position where ive run out or forgotten my cigarettes and just been desperate, so i know what its like. however, if someone is OBVIOUSLY a "social smoker" and just wont buy a pack i wont share. also sharing with friends goes without saying. i always say that the ultimate cigarette sharing of the universe is always in equilibrium. so if i feel ive been giving more than im getting, i ease off for a while. also i dont share with teenagers. i know its stupid, i was a smoking teenager myself, but i figure its better to try and limit the supply, keep them away, not break the law and all that. except for my brother, because well, hes my brother. and turning legal in like a month or something. and i only see him once in a while.
as for lighters, i lose my lighter all the time. its not about forgetting to bring it. they just get misplaced easily.
