The Bloggers With The Most To Say

I was walking down the street yesterday and a girl asked me for a match to light a cigarette and I immediately had 2 thoughts.

1. Sheesh this chick isn't even comitted to her bad habbit if she carries cigarettes and no lighter.

and

B. I wonder how many times smokers ask to bum a cigarette versus getting asked.

So my question is to all you smokers out there; What would you say your give to bum ratio is? Have you given or taken more cigarettes?

I find you...sexy. So...
i pretend i don't smoke. i don't buy packs unless i'm having a partying-intensive weekend. but whenever i'm just casually hanging out with friends (most of whom smoke), i bum. they don't care though, because i share other things with them.

i rarely ever flash a girlie smile to bum from strangers, but in my circle of friends, i'd say it's all pretty even.

as far as needing a light goes; i always have one on me and am asked for it often.
The only people I bum from are people I work with. We all run out constantly so we trade all the time. It's kind of a give and take thing. I really don't get asked for cigarettes that often. Occasionally, at school, someone will ask me for one. If I have enough in my pack, I'll let them have one because I know there have been times when I desparately needed one! I even got asked for one by a girl in the McDonalds drive through who was taking my money. WTF?

Also, I NEVER have a lighter and always have to bum. My fiancee is always taking them out of my purse and forgetting to put them back.
I'm not a smoker but my partner is. He never asks for cigarettes from others (well, not when he's with me) but he is always asked when we are out or even just in the street. This was especially bad in Melbourne, Australia when we were sitting outside a pub on the sidewalk (still part of the pub though) and he was asked literally about 10 times in the 3 hours we were sat there. The first few he was fine to give, but after about 4 times he was a bit exasperated, like "Does nobody in this city buy their own smokes?!" haha.
However he loves walking up to bums in the city and handing them a smoke, their faces light up and they look like its Christmas. It weird to take pleasure out of that, but I think he feels that something so little and a part of every day life for most people, is such a big deal for a bum - especially when they don't have ask for it.
I find it kind of weird though, being happy to give something to someone that will probably kill them :-S but then again, I'm a non-smoker! Hehe

I hate to bum cigarettes. Like, fucking hate it. It's degrading. I started smoking when I was 15 (for a very stupid reason) and back in the day when I was always broke and hardly had any money to go out (in Germany legal drinking/clubbing age is 16, my dear friends) I used to bum a ton... but now I never do that anymore. I also honestly don't like just giving away cigarettes. They're expensive, go buy your own shit. Seriously. Like, if a friend asks me or even a co-worker I usually say yes because.. well.. i know those people. But when I just wait for the bus or whatever and some douche walks up to me.. hell no.

The not carrying a lighter issue though... I have to disagree on the point of 'lacking commitment'. Haha. I always lose my lighters... I must have around 50 in my apartment but hardly ever find one. If I carry it in my purse consider it lost, too... it's the number 1 thing to get lost.

Personally, I was more surprised that she asked for a match as opposed to a lighter.

Do people just carry matches around with them?

I've asked for a light before, because lighters are surprisingly easy to lose. They're always falling out of my pocket.

I've never asked for a cigarette from a stranger. Ever. In my 5 years of smoking, not once. Because I'm not a loser who absolutely NEEDS a cigarette every however many minutes, to the point where I lose all shame and take a cig off somebody else who has paid for them. It's just not a civilised thing to do.

I've taken cigs from friends, but I'm not sure that counts as 'bumming' because we pretty much share our cigarettes, whoever has them.

I've been asked for cigarettes often. Whether I give them or not depends on how I'm asked. You'd be amazed at how rude and entitled some people can be. They'll be like "Give me a cigarette"... and I'll be like "No." then they'll start abusing me for being selfish. It's ridiculous.

If somebody offers to pay me for a cig, or if they seem apologetic about having to ask, then sure, I'll give them one.

I neither ask nor offer ;)

but ya at times when I go for a movie, the security keeps away the lighters and I forget to collect...so that way I have lost a couple of lighters. so I end up asking for a light. i bum a cig only wen offered, else never. Anyway my friends and my brands are totally diff.

I'm not a smoker anymore but last year when I was in art school, I was and people asked me for cigarettes ALL the time outside school during break. I felt like I should be charging for them sometimes lol (one guy did actually pay me like .50 for 1 every so often) and the only time I've ever bummed them off someone was my mom so I def gave more than I took from anyone.

LoL yea i dont smoke and  i work at a bar and i get asked this ALL THE TIME!!

one night i ever saw a girl outside begging ppl for change saying she has not eaten in days and giving a sob story about her boyfriend being sick and her family kicking her out...then i saw her walk to the store across the street and buy cigarettes with the money she collected...yea after that i made it my mission to tell everyone she was a liar and told them what she actually did with the "i have not eaten" money...needless to say she has not been back to my bar...

I think she might have been trying to start a conversation with you. Smokers always approach  me on the street when I'm walking past them wearing headphones. I mime that I don't have any and don't want to talk. If you smoked you might have found her sexy while she was inhaling. It could have been a good start...
