I've caught the crafting bug and have recently started making jewelry out of recycled products like bottle caps. Now I'm wondering if they're hot enough to hit the streets or if I need to go back to the drawing board. I'm looking for some feedback, so please let me know! Check out my blog and you'll see a poll. http://diysamurai.wordpress.com/2009/07/14/recycled-jewelry-hot-or-...
Thanks guys!
I'm going to vote on your poll, but I thought I'd comment here as well. I go apeshit over this kind of stuff, and I know my friends do too! While some of us are craftsters, and make our own other people I know aren't so good with that kind of stuff, and would gladly pay someone else for it. I think the stuff you've got on your blog is really cool, and certainly good enough to sell. So, in short: HOT.
I enjoy recycled and funky jewelry - especially those that use materials in an unexpected way. However, I don't purchase this jewelry any differently from 'new' jewelry. It has to be quality. It has to look polished. It has to be something I can wear to work. If it looks like something teenagers would wear, or is poor quality, then it's a big No.
Usually for bottle cap jewelry, it's a good idea to soften the original jagged edges, and create a full vignette within the space. A high-gloss coating over the entire thing is desirable, as it can help to pull it all together.
It looks like you're in the beginning stages of all this. The pieces don't look like little works of art on their own - the first thing I notice is the bottle cap, and the insides are pretty simplistic. I think once you get more practice and more ideas, the whole thing could really take off!
There's a lot of pieces like this on Etsy, and an example of a good piece (IMHO) is this piece.
