20 Something Bloggers

The Bloggers With The Most To Say

There's been a lot of discussion about 'spamming' on 20SB lately.  It's interesting, because we have a totally unique definition of the word 'spamming'.  We have a community of people who have a link to share.

Very few (awesome) communities are predicated on their members having an outside link they have a stake in.

Very few communities talk about spamming and aren't talking about brands and companies who've decided to co-opt the experience.  For all the frustration, I hope you all realize how hard we've worked to keep the real spam out of 20SB.

We have a community largely made up of new members.  We want 20SB to be a place to find new readers, new reads, and your own community.

We want the forums to be great.  Not a minefield of dejection.

....

So we're considering outlawing self-links.

We want to know what you think.

Basics:

- Start a discussion that links your blog = deleted/flagged.

- Excessive forum responses with self-links = deleted/flagged.

DISCUSS.

Honestly, I do not like this idea. I have found some AMAZING blogs because of people self linking. Not to mention, it's a lot easier to link to a blog post than to say "Go to my profile, click my blog, go to August and then read the post titled "

I think making a new topic for every new post is spam. I do not think new members making a topic in introduction is spam. I do not think posting a link that has something to do with the topic spam.

Just my two cents.
This is what I think is wrong. when you blog out something and you want to talk about it here too that's not wrong. and to mention that you did go more in depth n your blog if somene wants to read more isn't a bad thing either. Anything that just says "Do you like pianos read by blog" I Don't click. while it sucks, it's My choice whether or not to click the link or reply to the discussion and bump that post to one of the ones you see on the front page.
I agree with all the above.
I agree--- there's a difference between saying, hey, I"m talking about this too, or something related and waaay too much. Putting a link in every post - too much, posting just to put up a link - too much
I agree. When I first joined, I didn't really know what to do so I just went through the forums and started clicking on peoples links. I now follow about 20 blogs from here, and love reading them all on a daily basis!
I agree with this. If it's a community built on self linking then keep it. But don't let it get out of hand. Maybe limit it as to where and how they do it?
I agree...I have found some interesting people via self linking and have been able to get my own out there as well. I'm not talking about going to every person's page and putting a link to my blog on their wall..but If they post a topic and I have a previous blog entry on the same subject it would be nice to be able to share.
Hey we're having a discussion about something going on here, interestingly enough I have a blog post "linked her" talking about it. I'm not going to add anything more to the discussion, just link to my related post.

I mean come on, it should be obvious the person has no interest in the topic being discussed they just want a link back. The most hits I get aren't from when I link within a post, they come from my profile on here. Which means someone is interested in what you're saying or not but either way they go and find out more about you. Don't we all do that? If someone is saying something I like on here it will make me click on their profile and check out their site.

I honestly have never clicked on a single blog that's linked in someone's signature because almost all of the time those are the most shallow and uninteresting replies, meant only as it seems to make their link visible.

Man, shameless self promoters don't care about what anyone else has to say. They don't care about anyone else's blog. The only discussion they do is if it somehow benefits them. If they would just form normal relationships and have good conversation it will make people interested in checking out their site. I don't understand how this so hard for people to understand. It's something the great salesman in the world do compared to 99% of crappy salesman. They take stock in building relationships with their customers, caring about their lives over just pushing their products on them.
I think I took a seminar on this at some point... I seem to recall the key terms being "give something of value" in order to get interest --- its not valuable to have someone post a link in a conversation
I think its fine to "outlaw" self-linking. It's simple enough to click on the person's picture, which takes us to their profile page - which has a perfectly fine link to access each individual's blog.
I'm all for it.
I think this is a good idea. I've seen too many really promising threads devolve into people just linking to their own blogs and adding nothing else to the discussion.

I have made almost all of my blog friends on 20sb and without ever having linked directly to my blog. If people are interested, they know they can find that link on my profile.
DShan-- you are entirely correct to outlaw self-linking. If we're too lazy to click on the goddamn picture of someone whose discussion point interests us enough to want to go to his/her blog, then we should basically all be thrown under a bus.
