When you say 'domain', do you mean just a domain name or a seperate site? If you use Blogger, you can still have a domain name, it's usually just a case of redirecting. What are you going to use - Moveable Type, Blogger or another platform like Wordpress? Once you get going it's not that difficult, but it depends what you want to use.

I want a separate site. I want to try something besides blogger. I read on a site that Moveable Type is hard to use. I only have access to create and edit posts and comments with my newspaper blog. I read that Wordpress is easier to work with.

I used blogger when I first started blogging, I moved to a self hosted WordPress site some time ago and couldn't be happier. That is not to say there isn't some learning curve. The options are unlimited though. My host has great tutorials, I think most of the decent hosts out there do.

You might want to get yourself a free wordpress.com practice blog just to see what the backend is like. Remember with a self hosted blog you can add all different kind of widgets, add any of a thousand different free themes out there, or even design your own, and add all the java script you want, free wp does not allow javascript, you can't change the stylesheets and you are stuck with the widgets and themes they have. Think of the free wp as a sample of the potential a self hosted wp blog has.
