The Bloggers With The Most To Say

I'm dating a Brit.

Does anyone know a cheap way to text message overseas? Someone told me that they thought there was a way that I could text to some internet service that would then send the text to him, but I haven't found anything like that.

I use Sprint, and I have an old Rumor (which I might have to replace soon, as it's broken... but I don't want to have to sign up for a new plan, as I might be moving out of the country within the next year).

So far, we're relying heavily on Skype and e-mail to communicate. But it's frustrating not being able to text random quick notes during the day. I'm not always near a computer.

He just set up his phone so that he can Skype me. But I don't have a smart phone, so I don't have that capability...

I'm thinking of getting an iPod Touch just so that I can Skype on the go... But that's a lot of money, so I'm trying to look into other options.

Please let me know if you have any advice on that, or any other matters that involve overseas communication. I'd be grateful for any suggestions

Thanks,

~A~

yea it's too bad google doesn't allow international free Text Messages, only to Canada and US and puerto rico right now.

Why not just use yahoo messenger? You can download it to almost any phone I think.
I think mobile instant messengers would be your best option too. Just for the spontaneity.
I do have AIM on my phone, but I haven't figured out how to use it yet, and I don't know if he has it. I'll look into that, definitely. Thanks, guys. :)
Unfortunately Smartphones are the easiest and cheapest (trust me) way to get around the INSANE int'l text messaging charges.

The Blackberry let's you download and use pretty much any messenger - Yahoo!, MSN, AIM, Google Talk, etc. Be careful with regards to Skype though, not every provider offers it. My BB friend on Verizon has it, but not my BB friend on Sprint.

A really ridiculous way of doing this that my BFF and i discovered prior to getting my smartphone was "texting" via Twitter direct messages. You can set your Twitter to send these to you via text and then you can reply to them via text. And they're not public like regular tweets! I know - ridic but we were desperate. My Canadian wireless provider charges 25cents per text and the way we communicate - that could have easily led to $200 phone bills *eek*

I know data plans can be outrageous but for me personally, it's worth it. You just have to decide what's best for you. Sorry that was so long but hopefully pretty helpful :))

The Twitter idea is brilliant! I'm going to suggest that to him. Thanks!!!
if you get an ipod touch you can download a free app called textplus that allows you to text anywhere from free, I use it all the time to text from haiti to canada, and my brother texted home from europe with it, and all you need is a wireless connection

That's really cool, had no idea!! Does the iPhone have this too if you have a wireless connection? 'Cause that would be even more useful! :)
Yes it does. I used it while I traveled in Canada to text my friends back home. :) Works like a charm and I wasn't charged a dime for it.
That's brilliant! Okay, I think I have to get an iPod Touch. Luckily, I have a birthday coming up... Maybe I'll ask for help with funding this purchase. Thanks for the heads up!
