The Bloggers With The Most To Say

When someone follows you, are you obliged to follow them back? But what if you don't want to?

What are your thoughts? Mine are here:

I will follow most people who decide to follow my blog. I think it's just courtesy to follow them back. There are exceptions, of course. If their blog is full of hate, or if I notice it's mostly about a topic I have no interest in, or I'm offended by it, then I won't follow back. There is one blog out there I follow, but can't read, because my phobia is prominently featured. I feel bad about it, but I don't know what else to do!
I don't use google friend connect on my blog, so the only way I know who's following me right now is through Networked Blogs on Facebook and through some other blog listing site I never remember (but get the occasional email informing me of a new follower).

I'm not into the numbers game. If someone follows me just because they want me to follow them in return.. no way. I'm not about that. I want to follow blogs that I want to actually read. It's also why I'm picky about who I'll list in my blogroll. Most of those people are actual friends and people I've met in real life -- with the exception of about three people...

It's the same thing on twitter. If people want to follow me, that's cool, but generally I tend to only follow friends*, organizations I support, bars I go to, or the few celebrities I find interesting... Jenn actually wrote a good post about following on twitter and managing your account in her geek blog: Must Love Geek

*throw in acquaintances in here as well as I'm following some awesome 20sb-ers that I haven't actually met yet (though for some of them, that'll change this weekend!)
I don't have the google friends connect on my site either (potentially unpopular confession: I don't really get the appeal of google friends connect, to me it makes a blog seem like a facebook page. I use Site Analytics to track my vistors, etc.), so I guess I may not run into this issue as regularly as other people. That being said, if someone follows my Twitter I'm going to seriously consider following them, unless I go to their page and see that they follow like ten thousand people. Its like then I know that the follower just added me in an attempt to up their stats and they have no intention of actually reading what I post.

I guess I feel like if someone reads my site and genuinely thinks its funny and is interested in reading it, then chances are that I'll think that person in funny/interesting/whatever and want to follow them. Am I even making sense? I haven't had my coffee yet, so my brain is currently functioning at chimp level.
I don't get Google Friends either! =/
I don't really know who is following my blog so I just go by my regular commenters, and I usually follow most, if not all of them because I like their blogs, not really because of a common courtesy or anything. There have been a couple of people who I followed, but then stopped following, but for the most part, I follow my regular commenters :) I do check out everyone's blog that leaves a comment, though. I'm always looking for new blogs to read!
For those of us not on blogger, about 66 percent of all blogs, it is not such an invasive thing. I have no idea who follows me because I'm not on blogger. I put blogs on my reader or home pages to read and that is about it. I read blogs I like and if someone comments a few times I'll check out their blog and probably read it a few times and either put it on my reader or not depending.

I think there is way too much worrying about who is following you as people could follow you on blogger and never read your blog at all. You don't have to follow anyone back, it really doesn't make sense to me plus it makes that follow widget bloggers are so fond of very large and in some cases it makes the page hard to load. ;)
I definitely don't feel obligated to follow back. Maybe because I'm from the generation of bloggers (or website admins) who are used to being in control of their own outgoing links. I only blogroll blogs I enjoy reading, and I don't necessarily love reading all the blogs who follow me (OUCH I know). Most of them, but not all of them. I do make it a point to visit their site to comment, but I'm not about to put their link up or necessarily add them to my reader.
On the flip side, there are also blogs in my reader that I haven't added to my blogroll yet. Usually when I'm just "trying out" a new blog, I want to see if I do really want to follow it or not. I'll probably put those links up eventually.
I'm the same way. I add blogs to my reader first, and then I'll (maybe) add them to my blogroll later.
I don't have that many followers so it's not that big of an issue to follow someone who is following me, however I do follow a lot of blogs and I will subsequently unfollow a blog if it turns me off in any way.
Eh, I don't feel like I have to follow anyone. It's a busy world, I'm thankful for the followers I do have but can't just read someone because they follow me. Especially when some followers tend to follow you in hopes of you following them without actually caring what you are writing about. I think the quality of the follow far outshines the quantity.

that's just my humble opinion though = D
I don't follow anyone on Blogger. I only use Google Reader to subscribe to blogs, I find it easier.
Same here. I only use Google Reader.
