The *official* How Do I Get More Readers/Traffic/Try to Make Money From My Blog thread
Okay guys, I feel like we have one of these threads pop up every few weeks so in order to keep the clutter down, I'm going to feature this one. Any other threads that get posted about this will be deleted.
Feel free to ask questions and share your tips, tricks and advice about these things.
And now for my number one piece of advice about getting readers/traffic:
- Be visible. There are a million blogs out there so it's hard to stand out. If you don't let us know you are there, we won't see you. So comment on other blogs, be active on the forums, twitter, send emails, be engaging!

And now for my number one piece of advice about getting readers/traffic:

One major traffic driving that I feel is missing in this thread is guest blogging. Leverage people with an audience. We got one post up on Mashable that drove over 1,000 uniques in 24 hours, gave us 800 new Twitter followers and super SEO help.

As far as monetizing, look into affiliate programs - start with something like Amazon's Associates or look for a Direct Affiliate program from a brand you love or support. Without major traffic, advertising is not going to be a consistent income base. You need to create multiple ways for the money to come in. This can include some ads, some affiliate links, your own product and even some paid posts. From there see where the majority of the income is coming in and if it doesn't sacrifice the value and quality of your site, put your effort into them - the 80/20 rule.

I was just going to mention guest blogging! Find a blog that has content and readership that you think would also be interested in your blog. Do a quality guest post and link back to your blog. Readers of the host blog usually respect the taste and opinion of that blog's author, and will want to check out what they are interested in (your blog!)

the only way to be heard is to put yourself out there. i truly enjoy looking through the blogs on my blogroll, and commenting, and searching for new blogs. anyway. i think they best way to be heard is to get noticed: be active on other people's blogs. comment a lot. hehe.

I think its important to post consistently, especially in the beginning. Once you have some established readers you can break up your posts more. The more post you make, the more you will show up in google. If you can build your authority on google then your site will really take off.

I agree. I don't add blogs to my reader that are only posted on sporadically. Instead I just check back every month or two when I know they have enough content to warrant a reading. If you post 2+ times a week, I will read your post each time, which generates more traffic.

I too am on the want more bloggers thing. I've just now gotten into commenting other blogs a lot, I haven't seen a big improvement yet. There will be I'm sure, but checking out other blogs is SO much fun!

I love it that this thread is locked at the top, I read so many things about it.
I think the quickest way is to comment on people's blogs, however you gotta use your instincts figuring people who will comment back.

Like most people have already said, leaving comments regularly is one of the best ways to get more readership. Also, participating in the discussions on 20sb helps a lot. I also like to get in contact with the blog author through e-mail or 20sb just to let them know how I much I enjoy their blog. Basically, you have to be an active participant in the blog community. It's the same as real life, get INVOLVED!

So true. OMG. I feel like i'm becoming a bit lazy now. Time to catch up! I think visiting other's blogs, leaving a thoughtful comment, and creating funny, interesting, and engaging post will help you increase your readership.
