The Bloggers With The Most To Say

I know that many 20SB-ers are passionate about making a difference in their world. As someone who has struggled with depression and survived a suicide attempt, I wanted to draw your attention to the fact that today is World Suicide Prevention Day. There is a lot that you can do as an individual to prevent suicide.

Here's my post about my thoughts and feelings.

Wow. Had no idea there was a World Suicide Prevention Day...

When I was in 7th grade through 10th, I lived next door to one of my school most popular jocks. He was a total jerk to me all through middle school. He even egged my house one summer. When I was a Sophomore, and he was a Junior, he actually came up to me one day after school and tried to apologize for giving me a hard time and egging my house. I guess I should have swallowed my pride and accepted his apology, but I just blew him off. Because a year later, he hung himself.

I've always had a strange feeling of heaviness when I think about Zach.
Are we talking about... counseling your friends and stuff, to stop them from committing suicide?

Or, like... going down to your local skyscraper and talking someone down from the edge?
Well, Sebastian, the link I provided above, as well as my story, is definitely more of just being there. 20 SB is about community, which is why I thought this would be a good place to share. To Write Love On Her Arms has a vision about simply making people feel less alone: saying hi, asking the tough questions, and just being there. Obviously, suicide prevention takes many forms and everyone's journey is different---this movement seeks to just be there for those around us, remove the stigma from suicide and depression, self-injury, substance abuse, etc.
Sounds neat! I did a bit of Samaritan work at university -- anonymous phoneline stuff, mostly. Like to think I made a difference!
Those Phoneline people are heroes in my eyes---so you definitely made a difference. I have known so many who have been saved by a phone call. That's awesome.
