The Bloggers With The Most To Say

Dear anyone who can answer my question,

What is a blog award? If you receive an award, are you supposed to put the little icon on your sidebar? What is the etiquette here? Can I opt out?

If I choose not to put the icon on my sidebar and go through the award stipulations, will I have seven years of bad luck and provoke the wrath of the satanic-like creature responsible for messing with people after broken chain letters? Will I be shunned from the blog-o-sphere forever? Will the giant subway worm from Men In Black bust up from the sewers and swallow me and my computer whole?

Also, what is the point of a blog award? If anyone can make one and bestow it on someone else, are they really exclusive, desirable, or anything more than a ploy to get others to link back to the giver's site?

Three blog awards to anyone who can help me navigate these murky waters. I really don't want to be eaten alive by a giant CGI worm from the late nineties.

No replies? Really? This is a great topic! I'm surprised no one has come to the vehement defense of the blog award...
Blog awards, save for the occasional true juried award, are indefensible.
ha. Blog awards are either a) legit or b) somebody was bored and trying to promote their blog by passing around a blog award button. Most of them are a), unfortunately.
Hi there, I think blog awards do help you connect blogs, thus linking them. It helps you get more readers and it gives back some blog love when you acknowledge the blogger that gave it to you and the bloggers you gave the award to. Plus, some awards are funny...that said, I think that those who display the awards they received on their sidebar only do it to feed their ego...that's only my opinion though.
I'm not really sure what to tell you as I've never received one. My etiquette and protocol knowledge is limited. Thanks for asking though. Maybe someone can enlighten us.
I created a page specifically for "awards" because I didn't want them to clutter up my sidebar. I link to the person who gave it to me from there. I don't put them in blog posts unless there's a fun "task" that goes along with it because reading post after post about awards is really annoying.

And I think the worm is probably the least of your worries. I hear it's the graboids you really have to worry about.
I think the posts about awards are what is so awful to me. It's like everyone's all LET'S BLOG ABOUT BLOGGING!
Usually, blog awards are created by bloggers. But, I look at it this way: if you get a blog award, you are being recognized by your peers. They can't give you a raise, or promote you, so they give you an award and some link-lovin.

If you opt out, it's no biggie. You should never feel obligated to participate it the "stipulations" of the award. I've ignored one, because the person who gave it to me had obviously never read my blog, and was just looking for some self-promotion opportunities. If you accept it, there's also no obligation to display it in your sidebar (unless that's one of the rules... but really, what are they going to do? Call the internet police and tell them you aren't playing nicely?)

If you get one from a blogger you admire or respect, take it for what it's worth: a compliment from your peer, and don't stress :)
To be honest it's the blog's version of a chain letter. I'll never start one on my own.... but I'll participate if it's super interesting.

I keep getting the same ones over again.

I'll always thank the person that gave it to me... and truly appreciate it, but I just don't like participating.
