The Bloggers With The Most To Say

Hey all you English majors! I'm wondering--what is the best travel book you ever read? This could be a book about travel, a book that made you want to travel, or a book that so vividly described a place that it reminded you of when you were there.

For me--The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova was an amazing book for many reasons, not least among which were the rich descriptions of the mystery and gloom of Eastern Europe and Turkey. Also, The Millenium Series by Stieg Larsson, because I love Sweden and these books subtly reveal so much about the customs and culture there. (Minus all the sex trafficking and brutal crime... that's never been part of my experience.) Last, and yes... I'm a 20-something American woman... Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert. I just can't help myself. She warms my heart and inspires me. I can't wait to read her next one, Committed, when it comes out in Europe.

Can't wait to hear your thoughts!

Eat, Pray, Love is a def fave of mine! It's so inspiring, esp for a single woman.

I've read a few books by Bill Bryson who is a travel writer. He's Australian based and his book on Oz is an awesome read. Look him up, he's got a great sense of humor as well which makes it much more enjoyable to read.

The Posionwood Bible is set in the Congo about a Southern Baptist family who move there for missionary work. It touches on the customs of the people as well about the war and politics of the region. It's tough to get started but highly rewarding.
I also loved Shantaram - based in Mumbai. It's an outsiders perspective into India and it's culture.
The Innocents Abroad and A Tramp Abroad, both by Twain.
