The Bloggers With The Most To Say

What's the worst thing you've ever done to a substitute teacher?

So, I finally landed my first job in my chosen profession--a position as an occasional / substitute high school teacher.

The first few weeks were amazing, I couldn't understand all the stories I'd heard about bad classes, terrible behavior--students doing things to make their subs want to rip their hair out. Then I had a class who completely changed my views--complete with a student diving out a (first floor) window to escape my class. (The story is HERE)

So now I'm curious and I want to better prepare myself for any future crazy situation I may find myself in. What were your experiences like with substitute teachers when you were a student? What did you like? What didn't you like?

Any horror stories?

Ha, I read your post- hilarious! I'm not a teacher so I don't have any experiences to share with ya, but I DO remember one substitute teacher in particular... class was always so much fun when she was there, and oh did we give her hell. She looked very young, she was probably fresh out of college. She always looked terrified. She was so passive and let the kids do whatever we wanted. One time, she gave us an assignment and she sat at her desk as each one of us students took turns running across the room and sliding, then pushing each other around in the chairs. She didn't even say anything. Then we told her we were "going to get a snack" (which no teacher would EVER let go on), and we'd go into freshman hall and steal all the kids bagged lunches out of their lockers and bring them back to class and we'd all pig out on PB&J's and whatever other goodies we found. HAHA. This still makes me laugh. I bet she's not even a teacher anymore. She always looked so scared and careless. I bet she was thinking, "Oh my gosh, why did I go to college for education, this is HORRIBLE!"
Hahaha really? The one thing you absolutely can never do is show fear--no matter how terrified you are. Teaching grade 7 or 8 is the most terrifying experience in the world, but you've just got to "man up" and git'er done! haha!

I can't believe you stole all the lunches! haha
I know :( I look back at some of the stuff I did and think MAN I hope my kids aren't like that! Haha. I have matured though, I swear. Kind of.
OMG I remember one more funny one from middle school. We had this old lady substitute and she was all whacked out and always talked about her iguana. But anyway, every time she would turn around to write on the chalkboard, we would take turns hiding a kid. We'd stuff them behind/underneath her desk, behind other kids' desks, and in the closet. She'd turn back around and be like "Hey! Where did _____ go!?!?!?" And then the kid would pop out and be like "Here I am!!!" Hahahaha. This was so much freaking fun. She would get so mad.
is this a true story? are you serious? OH MY GOSH. As someone who actually teaches for a living, I cannot believe some of the people they let near children. WOW.
If I had a substitute, i usually skipped class because they never bothered taking attendance. lol.
Oh I've had this happen... kids walk in, see me (a sub), then walk back out. haha
i never did that. I always found out ahead of time if there was a sub. lol.
My grammar school class (parochial school, same classmates for 8 years) was WILD. We had this one teacher for 5th and 6th grade who did not know how to control us and that was pretty much where it got ugly. We made her cry the last day of school, in front of parents. Then in 8th they stuck a first year teacher with us and we KILLED her. From playing kickball and knocking down (and shattering) a statue of Mary, locking her out of the classrom, and getting thrown out of the Capitol on our trip to Washington, DC etc.. - this woman had a year of HELL.

I know you asked for a post about subs but if I remember correctly, we respected them because they disciplined us.
Oh sweet mother... I'm glad I wasn't in your class. haha! How did she respond to being locked out? I would FREAK OUT.
Hahah I don't remember HER reaction but I remember the principal (a nun) going on the loudspeaker and screaming at us.

Also, one time they brought us into the kindergarten classroom so the little kids could show us how to behave lol.
These posts are hilarious!! We were pretty passive towards our subs, but we did lock one out of the classroom! But the rest of ya'll sound like you were chronic!! haha! :P Hazel
