The Bloggers With The Most To Say

I just posted on my blog ranting about my job, and it made me wonder. How many of you work in a restaurant or ever have worked in a restaurant? I'm sure there must be quite a few...

I'm a server, and it's good for my schedule because I'm in school and it's way better money than most other part-time jobs out there. but sometimes it's just plain stressful and annoying. if they never have before, I think everyone should have to sit in and experience what it's like to work in a restaurant for just one day. most people that go out to eat just have no clue.

I worked in a fast food restaurant from age 16 to 18, and I worked in a sit-down restaurant the year after I graduated high school. I agree that it was stressful. You usually have to work late hours (I did, at least)... and a lot of people tip so horribly, not realizing that what they tip us is what we make. If I can help it, I'll never work in a restaurant again.
I heard about this as well from some of my friends. I always try to tip more but I doubt it'll make that much of a difference. Many people are just ignorant I guess, some are too overly picky with their food.
it does make a difference though. of course it's always nice to get a big tip from someone who wasn't much trouble... what's really frustrating when you get a crappy tip from a party that ran you to death. but yeah, most people are just ignorant I think. I always tip at least 20% no matter what, but that's because I'm a server and I know what it's like.
I worked at a Subway for 6 months and I hated it! It was very stressful, people treated me like I was stupid just because I worked at a fast food restaurant and it seemed like I was not able to wash the Subway-smell off of me. I was so relieved when I finally found another job!
I have worked in restaurants, but was a never a server. Not even the lure of great tips could make me want to do that job, and I am in awe of anyone who can do it and not go crazy!

I am totally with you though - I think people should have to sit in on restaurant AND retail work. People who have never done these jobs before have NO CLUE how tough it is and why you shouldn't treat your clerk/server/hostess like a piece of crap.
Totally agree with you! I'm a server and I have been for two years now, and it's given me an entirely different perspective on the food industry, especially wait staff. Everyone should do it for at least a few weeks so they can better understand that it's about more than carrying plates back and forth to and from tables.
i have worked in many restaurants and coffee shops.. and they were fun for the most part, but being a waitress just sucked! And i cannot hold the damn tray!!
I worked as a hostess for two years in a high-end Italian restaurant. It was the most fun and most stressful job I've ever had. And the only job I ever walked out of. (Had enough of the bs and walked out just before my 5pm Friday shift was supposed to start - best feeling ever hahah)

I agree that people should have to work in a restaurant for just one day - it has made me a really, really good tipper!
OHMIGOD. Never, ever again will I work in a restaurant.

I worked at Wendy's for a little over a year (off and on) and I spent some time (almost a year) at Ruby Tuesday while I was in college. I hated every second of it.

I agree - it IS better money than a lot of part time jobs, but you're really busting your ass for that money. I remember after a few months at Ruby Tuesday, I would have dreams that I forgot to wait on a table, and I used to wake up freaking out. That's just not healthy. After working at Ruby Tuesday, I really started hating 95% of Americans.

Also, there's only SO many times in a day you can put up with people commenting on how cool/unique/awesome/strange your name is...
I have those dreams of forgetting to wait on a table too, or just screwing up everything with all my tables (AKA being "in the weeds"). But I guess that just comes with having the job.

Thanks for all the responses!!

Another thing that sucks about the restaurant business is that there's always a lot of drama. It's like you just can't get away from it.
I worked at Cracker Barrel my Junior & Senior year in highschool as a Hostess. I loved that job! Everyone was fun to work with and the guests were always friendly!
I worked in a bakery/coffee shop once and absolutely LOATHED it. I was on £2.40 an hour and after giving up my whole weekend would come out with about twenty pounds. Perhaps working in a restaurant would have been better - at least I might have got tips!
