The Bloggers With The Most To Say

Alright, this is something that's been pissing me off to NO END recently. I always comment on blogs - as a blogger (and I'm sure you all can relate) comments totally make me happy and I love to reciprocate. Plus, it's fun and drives traffic and blah blah blah.

So WHY are you making me log in? Or, even worse, you make me use an OpenID or Blogger or Google account to log in. Guess what? I don't have any of those! Meaning I won't comment. I honestly can't see a plus side to this at all. Sites like CNN and WSJ require a user account to comment, but they're huge sites and apparently can get away with it. What's your excuse?

Annoyance aside, I'm actually curious. If you're a blogger with log in requirements or require commenters to use something like their Google ID, why do you do it? In case you've never thought of this before, read this HILARIOUS cartoon by The Oatmeal:

Um, I make people log in to comment so that I don't have to moderate all of my comments since without a login, 2/3 of them or more will be spam. I get enough spam as it is.
But why not install a spam filter?
Even a so called spam filter doesn't keep everything out...

Also, some bloggers like being able to follow up with their commenters, find their blogs, etc...

But yes, annoying.
Hm. Works fine for me! And you can follow up with commenters through regular comments.

Sorry, I realize I'm being argumentative, but logging in for shit has consumed my week and it's driving me crazy pants. I've now officially decided that I will never sign up to comment again! If you require people to leave their email and URL if they have one - you can do all the following up sans log in.
I always like following up to my comments by email. I have it set up under my Profile>Show my email. I've had it that way for awhile, and seems to work pretty well. It makes the whole experience very personal. You get to know the person a lot better. Well, that's how my experience with it has been.

I don't know about anyone else, but if I leave a comment on a blog, I'm not always going to go back to the same post to see if the blog owner responded to my comment.

Agreed - granted, I respond in a comment back, but the only time I actually go back to a blog post and check to see if I got a response is if it's one where I asked a question I honestly hoped to get an answer to.
I agree --- I don't use Blogger or Wordpress so the whole Open ID thing doesn't work for me either...

I was playing devil's advocate ;-)

I totally love your blog by the way!!
I do it to prevent anonymous comments- they're usually the nasty ones. And if you don't have the balls to say what you want to get off your chest under your own name and take the repercussions, then I don't want to know- I have no respect for cowards that would rather hide behind being anonymous. I also moderate all my comments- i don't think its necessary to have offensive or spam comments.
I'm the same way. I blocked it, where you can't leave anonymous comments on my blog. I also have mine set up where you must have a Google ID. For one main reason...I don't want anonymous comments.

I don't know what you mean by, logging in to leave a comment? I go to blogger, and login to my blog. That's the only logging in that I have to do. If I want to leave a comment, I don't have to login again. Maybe it is where, I already have a Google ID?
I agree - I require a sign in and moderate comments for the same reason.
I actually don't make people sign in to comment on my blogs. There is an option to post anonymously. I find i don't get a lot of spam and when i do I just go in and delete them.

But i find it nice when people do sign in, because they i can look at their blogs/info as opposed to wondering who is commenting.
I think people with blogger get a lot of spam, and they don't have the spam filter word-press does at least they didn't when I used blogger years ago.

i don't comment if sign in is required either, for a variety of reasons, but mostly because I rarely read anything great enough to sgn in to comment on, so to me it's a waste of time.
