The Bloggers With The Most To Say
Hey everyone!
Hannah and I are going to eat rice (and only rice) for breakfast, lunch and dinner for three days on February 8-10th.
Just a simple reminder that hunger is real, and that when we joke about starving, there are children and families who truly are.
We'll have more information posted soon, but I wanted to go ahead and see who all would be interested in eating rice with us & blogging about it. You can just do it for one day, for two, or for all three.
Who is in?!

Permalink Reply by cooper on January 18, 2011 at 4:29pm If I thought eating rice for three days and writing about would actually help prevent or even abate hunger anywhere in the world I'd do it. I don't, it won't. I mean seriously people are acting like this is some fun project. That makes me sad but it's not surprising.
I know the UN has has some similar events over the years, but I believe that wasting time in these types of efforts is why their millennial goals keep having to be pushed forward — or in other words have failed.
Though I realize the definition of poverty porn is subjective, for me stuff like this, good intentions not withstanding, is poverty porn. Not quite as bad a poverty tourism or a poverty safari but easier for those who participate, because they really don't have to do anything, eating rice is hardly a hardship for god sake. I mean Angela and her wife "love sushi"....as she says...like we know how much sushi starving children in Darfur get right?
It'd be great if everyone who is willing to participate in this fake starvation would actually spend a week reading intensively the blogs of people who actually work in international development or make policy in regard to it, those who see what works what does not, and where we seem to be going wrong.
Permalink Reply by Erin McCarthy on January 18, 2011 at 4:54pm I agree with you. It's more of a symbolic gesture to share with the people in our own lives---to act local and think global, if you will....
I don't expect to know more about what it feels like to starve after this. I just think I will spend three days being conscious of the wonderful variety of food I take for granted.
It's just a pebble. I don't expect it to spark the land slide but raising awareness is more than most people do. And holy fuck do I love some radical porn.

Permalink Reply by Alexandra Tsaritsa (call me Tsa) on January 26, 2011 at 10:46pm ^ Suki has the right idea. Why not actually take part in making a difference?
And I also wanted to point out that the title of this forum topic should read: "Will you eat rice with Hannah and me?"
I'll get off my grammar high horse now.
