The Bloggers With The Most To Say

So among my list of resolutions for the year, one was that 2010 was going to be the year I actually started to try my hand at web design. Make my blog actually look somewhat decent, you know? To start me off, I decided to see how I liked Wordpress 2.9.1 from Wordpress.org.

The problem?

While the zip files downloaded without problem, I can't seem to find any instructions on how to get this thing started. So my computer illiterate self is coming to you guys for help. Again.

Please and thank you in advance.

You'll need some hosting space somewhere, be it paid space with a hosting provider like BlueHost, Dreamhost, or 1&1, or a local "development" server you run out of your home (or even on the same machine you do your development on). If you don't have access to anything of this sort, you'll need to correct this issue before you can go any further.

Once you have the hosting situation out of the way, you'll need to unzip the contents of that WordPress ZIP archive and upload/copy the entire uncompressed bundle to wherever you're going to host the running WordPress installation.

Once you have uploaded everything, you'll need to visit the WordPress installation (the exact address will depend on your hosting situation and how you went about uploading everything), at which point it will walk you through creating and uploading a wp-config.php file that contains your MySQL database information (make sure you have this handy) and then populating the installation with an initial configuration. (You'll see why WordPress advertises itself as being a five-minute installation at this point; you really don't need much information or effort to get a working installation going.)

Since you're planning on doing theme development, you might take an interest in checking your theme against the latest development builds at some point so you have advance notice of any issues/incompatibilities between your theme and the upcoming version of WordPress. If you want, I can point out the development branch (which hasn't been changed all too much as of yet, but will be reshaped constantly over the next few months as WordPress and WPMU are combined) and help you get running on that as well.

Good luck!
Who is your hosting provider?

You have to host them somewhere. I've passed on a siteground christams code to a few people here, it allows you to get hosting for wordpress and a domain name for a year for less than ten dollars - quite a good way to try it. let me know if you want the code i thin it's still good someone else here used it just yesterday.

If you are going to design though, the best thing is to have a wordpress installation on a local host, how to do this depends on our operation system. It involves downloading wordpress and if you have a pc i like XAMPP LITE, though i haven't used it with Vista, http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html.
Thanks both of you and I now understand what I need to do. My main issue right is finding a hosting service but as this is an ongoing project, I'm in no rush on that front.
Shoot me an email...You know I do this stuff on a freelance basis and love helping out my friends.
