The Bloggers With The Most To Say

Hey guys...

So for work, my boss asked me to make some changes to our awful website. It's a wordpress self hosted site. I got all of the login info for Wordpress and our domain (A2 hosting) from our old, completely useless web guy..now I just don't know what to do with it!

I basically just want to install a new theme to make it a bit more navigable. How on earth do I do this? Just a quick rundown would make me the happiest person alive. Thanks guys!

What you need to figure out here is what you actually have access to.  If you don't have the proper credentials to upload and download files (or the host doesn't allow you to), you might be a bit stuck.  My guess is that you shouldn't have much of a problem, though.  Look in your host's knowledge base/administration areas for references to FTP and see if you can figure out what server to connect to and with what username/password.

What you'll need to do is find a replacement theme you like and upload it to your host using an FTP or SFTP client (FileZilla, CyberDuck, etc.), then go back and enable the theme in WP-Admin.

Oh! Thank you, thank you..I have all of the admin cred, just none of the admin know-how :)

I'll do some digging to see if I can do that. Once the theme is uploaded, will I be able to change it at all via Dashboard?

Yup. Once the files itself are where they're supposed to go, you'll see the theme in the Dashboard.

This is the link for A2 hosting for this http://wiki.a2hosting.com/index.php/WordPress#Installing_WordPress

but actually all you have to do is log in to wordpress itself, go to dashboard, then themes,( when you find a theme you like download the zip file to your local machine) and then you upload it and unzip it right from the wordpress dashbaord, wp unzips it for you, you don't need to do all that other stuff at all just for a new theme, though it really doesn't hurt to learn, it's not necessary for installing themes.

I use Fire FTP when I do use them though it's pretty easy.

Thanks! I'll try that first since it sounds easiest.
