The Bloggers With The Most To Say

I have been doing a travel tips series on my blog and my next topic is going to cover tips to help save money.

One thing I found in Florence that helped me save money was an english used book store. I was able to take the books I brought with me and finished, and exchange them for other used books for really cheap.

Anyway, I was wondering if any of you have stumbled upon similar book stores in major cities around the world? I'd like to come up with a list to add to this particular travel tips post.

Also, if you have any other frugal travel tips you want to contribute, I'd love to hear them!

Thanks,
Sheila

I love the Strand bookstore in New York City: http://www.strandbooks.com/ They have over 18 miles worth of books (new, used, rare, etc.) and it is awesome!
Do it! And leave behind any non-book-loving companions because you're going to want to spend some serious time marveling/shopping!
I can't give you specific names. I remember the Chiang Mai, Thailand was FULL of them. However, I was a little disappointed, because I almost never paid anything for books well traveling. I would just do the hostel exchanges, or straight across with other travelers. You end up with some random, and often very good stuff.
These are all great! I didn't even think about the hostel exchanges. Thanks Kris!
In Bangkok, Thailand: on Sukhumvit Rd. there are a tonne of used bookstores. I'm sure that there's a tonne over at Khaosan Road in Bangkok too.

In Bangalore, India: St.Marks Road has a tonne as well- Blossoms, Strand.. just that whole road down. Church St. too!

In Bombay/Mumbai, india: Churchgate has a tonne of roadside bargains.

In Quezon City; Metro Manila, Philippines- Bookay Ukay on Maginhawa St. There's another one about 200m down the road (next to fakhr's) that I don't know the name of.

In most "ukay ukay" (thrift stores) in the Philippines there are a tonne of used books. Also there's "Booksale"- a store with several outlets- there's one in Quezon City in Cubao, Metro Manila just by Gateway Mall. SM Mall North Edsa in Quezon City, Metro Manila has one too.

Friendly's Guesthouse in Malate, Manila has a book-swap going.

Hostels: in Vienna, Wombats do a book swap.
Eugene, OR may not be a major city to most people but Smith Family Book Store is my favorite used book store ever. Also London has a lot of really great ones where you can find some pretty old stuff for dirt cheap. I got a copy of the Odyssey printed in the early 1800's for one pound.
My boyfriend and I just went to NYC last month specifically for bookstores and coffee shops. I hate to whore out my blog on here, but I did a post here on all of the book stores we hit up. Some were chain, some were used, but we enjoyed every one!
I think it's ok to post a link to a relevant post --- it's the random URL littering that's a little spammy ;-) (And I'm loving this post btw!)
Agreed. :)
In Dubai, there is a used bookstore called House of Prose on the outside of Ibn Battuta Mall.
Amanda, this is perfect! Thank you!
There used to be one in Abu Dhabi too- in Liwa Centre! I wonder if it's still there. There's also another used book store/lending library off Salam St. It's in one of the back alleys behind KM Trading off Salam St.
