The Bloggers With The Most To Say

Hey all,

I'm about to finish up a writing workshop and am unsure about paying to do another one. I'd would love to meet other writers and really enjoy the community/ feedback aspects of workshops, but I'm not a fan of the price tag associated with them (these things often have a hefty one.)

I was wondering if any of you guys know of any more impromptu gatherings of writers to discuss work in New York rather then formally run workshops.

Or I was also wondering if any of you, New York based writers, would be interested in starting or participating one of 20sb's own (poetry, fiction whatever.) writers workshops/meetups.

Anyone interested or that has any suggestions I'd love to hear from you. Thanks.

I agree about the price tag....

Luckily I was still working for Northwestern University when I paid for their Summer Writers' Conference... I got to apply my tuition benefit, so it was 85% off.

I think if you're going to pay for a workshop or conference, do research into it. Know who's going to be on panels or what workshops they're offering. There are a few workshops out there that are worth the money (assuming you've got it).

If you can't afford a full conference, consider doing just one day.

As far as what's in NY, I really don't know. I'm on email lists for various university programs in Chicago, and that's how I know what's going on here. I just go to events for prospective students. Maybe see if there is a listserv for your area?
A really good resource is meetup.com: it's a social networking site that gathers groups of like-minded people for events and activities. I know in the Boston area, there are at least five weekly creative writing workshop-style groups, including ones specifically for 20somethings, first-time novelists, poetry, etc. It's an amazing resource and well worth checking out!
