I think it is really interesting how patterns start to emerge in your reviews. You start to see how albums tie-together and you may accidentally reference old reviews during a discussion. This week I wrote about the new Dum Dum Girls record AND the new She&Him album and it was not at all intentional that they were both albums which are influenced by 1960s girl groups.
I think there are just as many cliches in film reviews as actually films. Tons of buzz words that are used much too often yet hard to avoid. If you get too personal in film reviews you start to use your own intimate vocabulary that leads to using similar words over and over again. The other side of the coin, if you get too impersonal you fall back on a traditional style that can honestly be found anywhere on the web and makes your writing either bland or indifferent.
Folkways has 3 writers who each write their own content on different days of the week. The first week we launched (only a month ago) we each were surprised to find the similar phrasings that we used in each of our individual reviews. It is really hard to avoid the established vernacular associated with criticism. In the end, all you really have to give is your opinion.
