The Bloggers With The Most To Say

Hi guys--I noticed the forum had been very quiet here, so decided to start a new topic. I am interested in hearing your thoughts on why so few men blog. After all, it's a free forum to talk about ourselves...in an area where women outnumber men by something like 8 to 1. Sounds like guy heaven, right? So why are there so few 20-something guys in blog world? Maybe I'll cross-post this later to the regular forum too and see what others think.

It's a good question. It's like that stereotype that it's not a guy thing to go into therapy and talk about what you're feeling. Blogging is all about writing about what's on your mind. When something's on my mind, I do something about it, I don't usually sit and type into the atmosphere, crossing my fingers that someone will come by and see it. Also, if a woman blogs about the sex she just had with her boyfriend, it's hot. If I blogged about having sex with my girlfriend, it'd be like opening up locker-room talk about her to the entire world. I guess I'd rather have her tell everyone about my accomplishments than she'd like me to tell the world what her breasts look like.

It's funny that so many female bloggers devote a fair amount of energy to the frustration caused by guys who harass them on their blogs. There's been a lot of digital ink spilled about the hostility of online discussion boards and such, particularly towards women; maybe men face less trheatening behavior on message boards, so they assemble their online networks that way, while women have more control over the passive interface of blogging, and their networks assemble through mutual admiration rather than unified confrontation.
I have to agree with The Flash and say its owing to the stereotype that men don't know how to express their opinions, feelings and thoughts and that its usually female territory.

Blogs, or at least my blogs, are usually daily entries into the lives of the writer. It is a place where one can air their frustrations and joys and its really an avenue or outlet where you can be heard. Even if no one reads the crap you write, at the end of the day you feel lighter for getting something off your shoulders.

There are exceptions of course. Blogs that deal with business, technology, etc.

Ultimately maybe the reasons men don't blog more often is because they have less to complain about? ...

Chew on it.

I think I'll be the one dissenting opinion... In my experience, blogging is starting to turn in its focus. I'm seeing less and less "personal" blog where the author talks about their feelings. More often, I find blogs that are focused around a single topic. For example, my personal blog, jamesmconnors(dot)com, is about my life in the technology field. It has opinions for sure but it is not focused on my FEELINGS.

My other website, College Tech Central, is a technology podcast for college students. The only time that feelings get involved is when I'm expressing opinions about certain products, services, or experiences. I think that the whole argument rests upon what sort of blog you're looking at. CNET and ZDNET and most of Revision3 are all male dominated.

Perhaps the issue is less about a deficiency in men and we see the numbers play out as an extension of traditional gender roles. Women talk about lifestyle and health, guys talk about business and technology. Who knows - am I off on that one?

This pretty much.

That sad, it's a shame there aren't more male bloggers/writers on the internet. Makes for a pretty small community here if you ask me.
