The Bloggers With The Most To Say

Since I brought Waldi, my mini dachshund home last spring, we completely dodged winter, so I'm wondering how everyone manages this less than dachshund-friendly season. Waldi refuses to step foot in the snow, hates going for walk with any type of wind, and heaven forbid there is ice. Do you use jackets, boots, or hats? I'm completely new to having a cold dog who doesn't love to run and play. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

Try picking up one of the waxy, deoderant-looking sticks. You basically rub this stuff on their paws to keep them insulated and protected from salt, snow and general cold for short times. Enough to get them outside for pee at least! You might be pushing your like trying to go for full walks in the winter but just remember how cold the little man must be :)
Thanks! I'll have to grab some. I also put down a heating pad in one of his favorite sleeping spots but now I can't get him off of it.
My dachshund stays inside by the fire all day during the winter. When it snows we have to shovel away an area next to the porch to go to the bathroom because he won't get in the snow. I have tried to keep sweaters on him but he HATES it. The dogs sleep out in the garage at night so we have a heat lamp out there for them.
Thanks! Great idea, once the snow is deeper than 2 inches I will have to break out the shovel for him.
If Waldi will wear sweaters or coats, go for it! My dachshund Moose doesn't love to wear them, but he will do it in the winter because they help keep him warm. When he sees the sweater he also knows its time to go outside, which makes him happy.

I tried the little booties, which Moose hated right away, trying to pull them off, almost as fast as I got them on. He looked really funny walking around the house with them on. Once I got him out in the snow with them on, he was more accepting of them. But, I think they are much more work & annoyance to him then they are worth.

Just stay in tune with Waldi and if he appears to be getting too cold (even with the precautions you have taken) take him back inside to warm up. Maybe he will adjust to the cold with multiple short exposures to it over time?
Good Luck!!!
If you find any good tricks, please let us know about them!! :)
