The Bloggers With The Most To Say

I remember hearing that the Millionaire Matchmaker made one of the girls straighten her hair, or she couldn't come back. I've battled with my hair for a long time, but have embraced the curliness (mostly) for a while now. I feel like to a certain extent, it's media, etc that we're battling more than our own hair. I still feel self-conscious about it sometimes, and I'm wondering where that comes from.

It's often subtle, unlike on the Millionaire Matchmaker, but it still bugs me. For example, I've watched two really great movies recently: The Women and The Jane Austen Book Club. Loved them both, but the same thing bothered me about them. They both feature a group of women, and one of those women in both movies has gorgeous curly hair and, unfortunately, is screwed by her husband, which sends her life into shambles. There's a great transformation of both women where they regain their confidence and their sense of self. BUT, as they do this--they straighten their hair. It's almost as if they are symbolically saying that when they got control of their hair, they got control of their lives. They started dressing differently, and were happier, and got rid of their curls. I envied their hair while it was curly, and thought it looked no better, or maybe worse straight.

Sorry for the rant. Has anyone else seen those movies, or noticed something similar in other movies/TV shows. I'm not really sure what to make of it, but I've been thinking about this for a few days since I saw the second movie, and thought this might be a good place to share. Thanks for reading!!
