The Bloggers With The Most To Say

What a great group! I'm definitely going to need to spend some time here mining some new style ideas. But I have one extremely pressing question:

I have split ends. Every time I get it cut, the hairdresser tells me I have to take so many inches off to get rid of all the split ends. But that leaves my hair too short for my liking. Then I spend months growing it out and by the time it gets to a nice length, the split ends are back and I need to cut it all off again.

So my question is: Is it really necessary to cut off all of the split ends? Any way to repair them other then lopping it off?

Another more long term question: what do i do to avoid them? I wash and condition my hair every other day and never use any heat for styling. Any ideas of what else I can do?

Since your stylist is saying you have a lot... If you look at your ends, it should be pretty easy to see what a damaged end looks like. They can be split, frayed, or have these funny looking little bulb-things, where the hair breaks really easily. The only want to fix it is to cut it above the damage.

The problem is, if you don't cut them off, they just get worse -- and fast! (If they get too bad, they'll increase frizz, make your hair look dry, or if you have too many it'll be easy to see from afar your hair's damage.) So, it's best to get several short trims instead of going months without cutting at all. Since you don't use heat, my guess is that it's just a build up of time that's causing the damage (if an end goes too long without maintenance, eventually it just gets old -- and when it does, it becomes damages).

If you don't see any split ends... You might want to get a second opinion from another stylist...?
