I don't know about you guys, but here in the states I find there is a common Italian stereotype that follows me around. I tell people that I am Italian, and they automatically assume that my family is Mafiosa, and that I should be short ( I'm 6') squatty, and have an affinity toward all types of pasta.
This isn't quite the case. My great grandfather was a professor at the University in Biella, which is in NW Italia, fairly close to Milano. Northern Italians seem to be left out of the cool, or sometimes annoying stereotypes, but nonetheless, I'm interested to find out where you are all from, and what you run into on a daily basis in the way of assumptions about us Italian Americans.
:)
Ciao!
I'm sicilian...when I tell people that they automatically assume that my family is in the mafia- which is far from the truth. As far as other stereotypes go...I'm short, actually my whole family is short. I have darker skin- people actually think that I'm mexican on a regular basis. My father owns a construction company, and my mom makes 5 course meals and pasta is always part of it. We all have "dinner" @ 2pm on Sundays, at the end of August we make our own homemade sauce in out basement...speaking of which- my parents have a kitchen in the basement, because you can't really cook in the kitchen...I'd say that my family pretty much falls into almost every stereotype that there is.
I completely understand...I tell people I'm Italian and they automatically think of Sopranos. Apparently my brother thinks he is that kind of Italian too, but my family is not. My grandparents grew up dirt poor in Lucca, Italy and ate polenta which was common poor-people food. Now its sold here like its a rare food, kinda funny to me. But yet being a Northern italian doesn't seem to have that kind of "cool" you were talking about but I'm ok with it. But I also have lived in California my whole life, so its not as stereotypical here like New York I think.
Either way, I'm proud to be 75% Italian and have a family that has lots of traditions from my culture-mostly food :)
