The Bloggers With The Most To Say

Can I join this group if I'm a lapsed runner? Last year for about 6 months (spring to early fall) I was a dedicated, disciplined runner. I lost weight, got in great shape, ran my first race (5K) and in general felt fantastic. But once the cold weather rolls around...it kills me! I hate running on a treadmill and living in Boston it's so darn cold out there. Do I just need to suck it up and run outside? It's so hard for me to run in the cold. This is why I get fat and lazy over the winter.

Anyway - cool group!

Ha! I'm ABOUT TO BE a lapsed runner... Got another month before life takes me away for awhile, right before I was going to be running another half-marathon :( Ah well, what can you do?
Also - the cold is getting to me, too... I, too, am getting a bit fat 'n lazy this winter!

And I'll second it - cool group! :)
I feel you! I ran a half marathon in December and haven't run anything above 3 miles since. I just can't make myself...I know I'll feel better after I suck it up and get out there...and since the buttons on my jeans are growing farther apart these days...I guess I should!
Runners World has a GREAT article on outdoor running in cold weather in the most recent issue. I sent it to my team last week. It's got some motivation tips. www.runnersworld.com

I don't know COLD like you know cold - I live in Atlanta. But I went for a great 5 mile run yesterday in DC - it was 23 degrees and clear skies. It felt GREAT. You just have to wear the right gear. NO cotton. Make sure you clothes are dry fit. Mizuno just came out with this fabric called breathe thermo that warms up when your skin sweats. I hear it's AMAZING. www.mizunousa.com

The best thing to do though is find a training team or partner. It holds you accountable to show up for your runs. I'm a huge fan of Team in Training. TNT benefits the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society by raising money for patient services and research. So while you're fundraising, you have a team to train with for a GREAT CAUSE. www.teamintraning.org. The best weekend of my life was the weekend I finished my first marathon with Team in Training. There's simply nothing more rewarding.
Hey Chrissy-doing TNT myself! Heading to the event in Nashville on April 26th...are you going?

Oh, Nashville...how I love thee. I ran the Nashville 1/2 in 2006 and 2007 and loved it. This year however, my girlfriends and I have decided to go to Moab, UT to run the Canyonlands 1/2 on March 8. Should be beautiful, but I will miss Nashville. Some day I'd like to do TNT, but right now I run with two different running groups and it would be hard not seeing all of them several times a week. Plus, the whole raising several thousands of dollars thing is a bit daunting, even if it is for a great cause. Good luck girls!
I've been down for about a month due to various reasons: winter weather, illness, work commitments, etc. I can't help but feel a little guilty, but it is what it is. :-p I do plan on getting back into the habit once it warms up a little bit.

You know, for me it's not really the cold because I know I can always wear more layers to stay toasty--and once I get moving I'll be sweating like mad anyway. That's not a deterrent so much as the snow and slush on the ground. I don't like the feeling of having no traction. Also the feeling of ice cold water flooding my shoes is just not all that great.

I guess overall I'm trying to accept the fact that "life happens" and that I'm going to have a down season now and then. What matters is that I get back into the groove of things at some point, isn't it?
I live in Breckenridge, Co...believe me it gets really cold and snowy here. But in the winter everyone wears Yak Traks, they are little things you slip on the bottom of your shoe that lets you have traction in snow and ice. So that, some serious mental motivation and the right clothing balance can definitely keep you running in winter.
I recently just started up again! Has anyone else returned yet?
I'm involved in a few running groups, so that helps me stay in the running groove year round. It's become a social thing, not just a running thing, which makes it a little more fun and motivating. Getting prepped to run a marathon at the end of May.
I agree with you on how running in a group keeps you motivated. I joined the local running club in May last year. Prior to that I had no experience. I think if it wasn't for the group and the encouragement that came from it I would have quit soon after starting.

Right now I'm training for a 10K some time in May.
It's all about getting the right gear! I don't know much about running when it's snowing (I live in sunny socal), but I have gone running while it's about 40 degrees outside (so cold!), and it's all about having the right gear on! I love suiting up, and warming up before you hit the great outdoors :D.
