What do you do when both of you are not working? We don't have cable ... or any reception, so watching TV is out. We're trying to figure out other activities to do...
We don't have a TV either but in the UK you can watch some TV programs online so we do that for some shows. Also we watch DVDs - Lost, 24 and Heroes are our favourites, we were given some as wedding presents.
Apart from that we go for walks when its nice, make chocolates, play board games.
I was just thinking about starting a discussion about this! We're looking for fresh ideas for dates that do not cost too much money (something to get out and have fun). We like playing cards and doing fill in the blank puzzles together while home.
I've been married for 6 years and we're totally trying to figure this out too! We don't have a TV either, but we've been watching way too many DVDs of TV shows, so we might as well have one! There are a few things we've been trying lately: going for walks, learning massage ... I'm unemployed and he's a student right now, so we're having to do a lot of cheap stuff too - we make brunch together every Sunday, and once a week we make dinner together and have a nice date-night (it has been a recipe we haven't tried yet and we switch who picks it every week). The other thing I've noticed it kind of strange is that we aren't involved in each others work/school lives much ... so we're also started our own little "book-club" kind of thing: first book is one we both want to read, the next book is from his field, then next book is from my field, etc etc - that way we can talk about each other's fields and interests as well; we generally discuss the books during Sunday brunch. Anyway, long-winded on a pretty slow discussion, but there it is!
how about something athletic? My hubby and I just started going to a climbing gym on the weekend. It takes a bit of gear but one can also rent a harness. Pretty cheap too, usually about $10-15 for day pass, the cost of a movie. You could go old school and do something like racketball :) What else? I've been aiming to do a theme night where we rent a movie and have a meal that relates: Sopranos and chicken carbonara? You guys could take a drive and find cool things/perspectives to photograph. I find this can be amazing even in big cities. What else? If you're not vegetarian you could scope out all the (best) burger joints in your town, though you might find some real dives. Other than that, go see some local, live music, try most everything free in your city, take community cooking or art class. I find just exploring together is fun. Hope that helps.
My husband and I always try to get out of the house on weekends. We love going to botanical gardens (which are free) and free days at the museum. We go to the library together; I get books to read and he gets CDs to copy onto his iTunes. Sometimes, we just go uptown and walk around; I'll take photographs and we'll chat.
Work out, volunteer, cook/bake, bowling or darts, I make jewelry, husband keeps busy doing house projects. We have two dogs - they keep us pretty entertained too! (On more uninspired nights I sit down with some wine and a movie or mess around online reading blogs, playing games, etc.)
If yo have internet at home, you can watch just about anything you want online. Also, we have tons of board games and have learned a lot of card games. Some of the best we've found for two players : Starships of Catan, Bananagrams, Stratego, Scrabble, Golf (Card game), Hand and Foot (card game), Uno, SkipBo and Phase 10.
We also like to go out for coffee/tea/chai and just chat, go window shopping at the mall, and walks around the neighborhood.
We watch a lot of TV online (we don't have cable either) but hulu.com is great for that. We also will go walk around Downtown or shopping centers together.

My husband and I have taken up working out together, and we're currently training for our first half-marathon. We also like to work on our home together, make new recipes, and since my guy is a huge movie fan, we rarely watch regular TV, we watch DVD's instead. He is looking for a classic car to work on in his spare time, and I'm a big volunteer kind of girl in my spare time. It just depends a lot on your personalities and what you guys like to do.
