So, I'm not yet in Melbourne, but there's only 23 more days until I am.
Which means I've been scouring the internetz for flat rentals in Melbourne. Just because I'm crazy like that and a huge slacker at work :-)
Anyway, my boyfriend (who's lived in Melbourne for 5 years) is generally pretty opinionated about WHERE in Melbourne we should live. But I was wondering if I could get a few other opinions since I obviously have zero knowledge of the city.
So we're looking for fairly cheap ($250/wk) 1 bedroom flats in the city. It needs to be close to some form of public transit -train/bus/tram and definitely not way far out in the outer suburbs. I love the Brunswick area, and we previously lived in Northcote/Clifton Hill area which we also liked.
It seems like every place I suggest, the bf is pretty insistent we're going to get murdered in our sleep (and it's not like I've been suggesting Footscray? Frankston? Whatever F-place he's always talking about as sketchy). I've been suggesting places in Carleton, Northcote, Fitzroy, Brunswick etc.
So, anyone have suggestions of non-sketchy but still cheap, interesting, vibrant suburbs I could start apartment hunting in? :-) Also, if he is right and we are going to get murdered in our sleep while living in Brunswick, please give me a heads up, so I can stop being interested in all the cute, cheap apartments I want to rent!
Brunswick isn't too bad. It just depends, honestly it is so exxy and hard to get places at the moment that you are better off not being too picky about where. The market is terrible at the moment.
Fitzroy, Carlton and Brunswick aren't so bad now cos all the gangland peeps are dead. It also wasn't too bad anyway when they were around cos they were only killing each other off. :)
