The Bloggers With The Most To Say

More and more people are throwing it all away and living on the cheap...is this something you would ever consider?

I'd love to not have to have a full-time job, but all my college loans have monthly payments, and I just couldn't survive if I didn't. I'd rather have a few part-time jobs and do different things.
In one word.  Yes. :)

YES! All the time.

When I was 25 I took a 4 month sabbatical, which turned in to a 1 year 5 month "life break". I travelled to the States and lived on minimum wage (sometimes less) doing seasonal work. Lived on the cheap. BEST time of my life. hands down. :)

Dunno that i could do the "live off the land" thing though. That takes real commitment! x P

I considered doing that until just a few weeks ago when I realized that I need to find something in my life that's not only  worth working hard for but has some kind of...and I cringe to write it...prestige.

It's not that I don't see value in living on the cheap and somewhat outside our uber-capitalist system. To put it as simply as possible, I am at heart a hippie who believes capitalism squashes our humanity. I respect my friends who work on co-ops, volunteer at anarchist book stores, and work for minimum wage and tips. These jobs let them be who they are and ultimately that's all anyone needs to do.

But I want to be financially independent and respected. I want my family to feel my college degree wasn't a waste. I want to be able to afford international travel, an apartment where I can host friends and family comfortably, and a college education for my future children.

I am a Marxist waiting for the revolution, but I want to live a privileged life while I can. If I can someday do the work I want to do without regard for money, trust me--I will.

This is my plan..only I'll be traveling in Europe after my internship in London ends July 2012. I'm planning a 4-6 month pilgrimage around the world, or just Europe. I graduate next May and will be debt free and it's the perfect time to travel before growing some-sort of roots. Oh and student loan payments.

Yes.

It's not that I don't want to work, it's that I want to do what makes me happy! I will find a way to make money doing what I like, but for now it is definitely a difficult balance!

I wish.

Sure have. My biggest fantasy is just running away from everything and doing what makes me happy. I think this fantasy only exists, though, because my current job is nowhere near fulfilling.

I used to swear up and down that I'd always want to have a career to keep my mind occupied...but lately (call it getting older or nesting or whatever), being a stay-at-home mom is sounding more and more appealing. The desire to make a home and raise kids myself is starting to far outweigh the desire to go to a job everyday that I don't particularly enjoy.

I wish I could but my college loans are out of this world as well.

I think about this every day. The only thing that stops me is my mortgage. I love being a homeowner but sometimes I'd love to just walk away from it all.

I guess there is always the lottery! :)
