The Bloggers With The Most To Say

Every once in a while something happens and I look at my husband and say, "We have to get out of the south." Then, when I remember that my family is so close by, that the weather is great (except for hurricanes and the 5 months of summer), and that people here do love to party, I remember why I haven't left. So what is it about the south that keeps you here? What is it about the south that makes you want to run for the Mason/Dixon line?

The people! I often run into political views counter to mine, and maybe if I weren't a pretty white lady, people wouldn't react so well. But folks here are kind, patient, and a hell of a lot of fun! I also like feeling like my size-12 body is attractive and fits in with the ideal rather than being an obese aberration (as I might in LA or NYC).
i just moved here in january from minnesota and i'll tell you the biggest reason for me to stay right now is the weather. the people are beautiful but the job market isn't, the cities don't feel like cities to me, and i'm a fifteen hour drive (because who can afford to fly right now? not me) from my closest family. i just visited chicago for the weekend and didn't really want to leave... i do think i'll make it back to the midwest eventually. we'll see.
I'm a little late with this - oops! But, I love the food in the house. Seriously, I have no idea how I ever lived without conveniences like Chic-fil-A, Bojangles, Sundrop, BBQ (the pulled pork, not pulling out the grill!), sweet tea, etc. I moved from PA seven years ago for college and cannot imagine going back! The culture is like none other, takes some getting used to, but 'once you go southern may the good Lord help you never go back.'
I've lived in the south most of my life, but I really did my growing up in Colorado and that's where my heart is kept. I think a lot of people just haven't been anywhere else and don't know any better. I really don't like it down south - particularly where I live.

Let's face it - I'm not racist, but I would like to live someplace where I don't go to college for free because I'm the minority. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that people here are racist against white people. I know it's not like that all over the state, but it sure is in Orangeburg. :/

The job pickings are incredibly slim. My husband has a degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in forensics. He's incredibly bright and he has so much potential. But this state is really holding him back. I can't wait to get out of here so we can both spread our wings a bit.

Only reason to stay is for the low cost-of-living.
I love that everything is so laid back. Here in Calhoun everything is so predictable and there is something comforting about that. Town is completely empty early on Sunday mornings because everyone's in church.

But I can't stand that so many southerners are so narrowminded and prejudice.
I have a love hate relationship with the weather in Florida. I love that it never snows here, but sometimes I wish it wasn't so hot and humid ALL the time.
I love the pace of life in the south. I feel like I have all the time in the world and I can just enjoy life. BBQ is ridiculously good, as well as sweet tea. I love the fact that I live in Huntsville and am surrounded by tons of NASA related technology and can throw a rock in any direction and hit a rocket scientist, but I can drive the 30 minutes to my dad's house and ride horses, go swimming in the river, or hell climb a big ass tree if my heart desires. I love how hospitable people are in the south and how your neighbors feel like they have a real invested interest in your well being. Also, if someone you know dies, you'll definitely get a casserole or 20 for a few weeks. I wrote a blog about it a while back.

here ya go.
I miss EVERYTHING! I've been gone for so long but I can't wait to get back :) Hopefully it won't be too much of a culture shock...
