The Bloggers With The Most To Say

So far I've found it very easy to go to class, do shows, and only read what is assigned to me.  Now I'm developing a taste for independent script reading/research.  A fellow theatre student told me she never reads a play unless it's assigned to her.

What about you guys?  Isn't it cheating ourselves to not extensively read material from the field?

It totally is. I wish I read more in college when I had the time to read. Now that I'm out & working 40hrs/wk to pay bills & 40 hrs/wk (of cheap or free) work on theatre I don't have a lot of time to do it.

Reading a play isn't the true experience of what a play should be but I find its very helpful to determine what the playwright actually intended over the director/producer/actors/etc. Not to mention, not every play you want to see is going to be staged down the street so it's really the only way to broaden your knowledge of what there is to see, do & influence your own work.
