The Bloggers With The Most To Say

Hey guys!

So I know everyone is sick of this recession but what can we do? Just hold out and hope for the best… I’d like to share my story and ask for some advice. I’ll keep it short. I was living in Raleigh working a great job I loved but not making too much money. That’s ok, I’m all for doing what you love and what makes you happy. I got laid off and moved back home with my parents to Erie, PA and applied to grad school. It seemed like the best option in these trying times. I got into Portfolio Center in Atlanta for Design, I already have my BA in Graphic Design. However I’m not so sure going back to school for 2 years and going to massive debt is really something I want to do. So here is where you come in. I am a Graphic Design with Advertising and Marketing backgrounds. I’m thinking I just want to move to a creative city with friendly people, sunny weather ( don’t mind the snow but need the sun) and nothing too big or overwhelming like NYC. I’m thinking about Boulder, CO right now. I know it’s expensive, but it’s got lots of positive aspects. Anyway, what places or cities do you guys think are sunny fun places and could be good for a designer or creative? I’d like another fresh start but what to make sure I’ve checkout out some great places. Wouldn’t want to miss anything. Thanks! And of course good luck to everyone trying to make it in this recession.

Asheville, NC is a pretty creative place. It's beautiful too, and people are really friendly.
its very coincidental that i read this, i'm actually looking at temple university at the moment b/c it looks like it offers a full ride...i just graduated with my ba as well and CANNOT do anymore loans..whatsoever, haha, so i need free schooling!!!

Temple offers a great web design/graphics program seemingly, but other places that have come up in my research are LA and Rhode Island...good luck!!!

and also..how is PA? i'm from south texas, in an area very close to mexico where we have 0 snow...and i hear it gets cold up there...haha
I recently moved to Columbus OH and love it. (Granted, I'm from a small, podunk, former-industrial town in Indiana, so it's possible I could be biased) Way, less expensive to live than, say, Chicago or New York, but a great music scene, lots of tasty unusual food, The Wexner Center AND Columbus Museum of Art, plus the people are generally friendly. (woo! Go midwest!)

I don't know that I want to stay here forever, but it's a great "starting-out' city.
Nashville, TN is a great creative city. Tons of great music, photography, graphic design ect.
Well as soon as I saw the title of this post I thought about Raleigh but it seems like you were already there. I actually have been living in Raleigh and working as a creative director for a little over 3 years at two different companies (the newspaper I worked at closed but I found a job at a magazine 2 weeks later). I think the key for finding a creative job (or any job) is to figure out what the big companies in the area are and to look at the company website for job postings. I actually have seen a lot of creative jobs in Charlotte. It seems they are pretty big with the web design/social media world. When I was looking for a job I saw a lot of stuff around D.C. I think Living Social is based there and Chicago looks pretty creative too, that's where Groupon is based out of. Hope that helps!
