fantastic question!
to be honest - i haven't been disappointed in any of the places i've visited (knock on wood). having said that, i haven't visited even a quarter of the places i want to visit. one place i expected to be disappointed in was L.A. but i totally loved it - everything about it. i thought the people would be extremely 'snooty' (sorry if there's any L.A.ers here!) but it was the total opposite.

the US states i've visited haven't been that random - i'm sure some fellow travel junkies will have suggestions though! what about you? travel junkies?
Nashville, Tennessee
Charleston, South Carolina
Santa Barbara, California (or anywhere on the California coast)
Austin, Texas
Destin, Florida
Savannah, Georgia
Portland, Maine
Burlington, Vermont
Raleigh, Wilmington, Outer Banks, Charlotte, North Carolina
Charlottesville, Virginia
Portsmouth, New Hampshire
Kona and Captain Cook, Hawaii (Big Island)
Colorado Springs, Colorado (Garden of the Gods!)

I know none of those are really that random, but some of my favorites!

I've visited 43 of the 50 states (44 next month when I go to Alaska), and like Kay, haven't really been disappointed anywhere! Though coming from TN, I'd say that a lot of the Southern states - Kentucky, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama -- don't hold much appeal! Then again, the beautiful ones -- TN (obvi!), Carolinas, Georgia, Virginia, Florida, are nice!
I second Nashville and Austin! (I haven't been to the others.)
And I would say that Destin is incredibly random! I grew up in Florida and have never been there. What's it like?
Oh Destin has beautiful beaches! Granted, it's become overcome with tourism, but it's kind of funny that it's so close to Panama City and is so vastly different. My family starting going there in 1994, before the wave of condos and complexes starting taking over, and the change is astounding. But still it's just got a nice, laid-back vibe to it without the PCB trash if you know what I mean! I've been all over Florida, and it's probably my favorite spot -- though I must say you can't go wrong with the majority of places you go in FL!
I LOVED Memphis. I loved everything about being there. I spent a week on the Mississippi Delta doing service work a few years ago, and though it's not really ideal for a little jaunt, it was a wonderful place and a great experience.
I haven't been to Maine, but I live in Portland, so maybe I'm a little biased when it comes to how amazing the Pacific Northwest is. ;)
Oh yes, and how could I forget -- Knoxville, Tennessee (where I attended college) and Sewanee, Tennessee are both beautiful!!
I agree TN is beautiful. Of course I live here so I'm a little biased. But I do find myself driving around marveling at how pretty it is here! lol...
Madison, WI is an amazing place to live and I assume a great place to visit as well (but not in the winter!). The spring and summer and full of wonderful festivals, the city is entirely walkable (with good public transit if you ask someone for help), and it is full of trees and lakes and parks so it's absolutely gorgeous! A 2-hour drive from Chicago and about 4 hours from Minneapolis. Madison is a college town so there are a lot of young, hip students running around and there are tons of amazing bars and restaurants. Plus we have the biggest (or is it second biggest) Farmers Market in the country every Saturday and an entire car-free street of shops and cafes. Basically, you should come here immediately.
wow - your description makes me want to head to Madison for a mid-summer get away!
Madison is fantastic! The only catch to living here is the 100 inches of snow we got this winter! Actually, this winter was bizarrely intense-- the previous average snowfall was something like 30 inches, I think. I've lived here for four winters now and they're generally really beautiful, but the snow does get old after awhile.
