About Me:
I'm an educator, technologist, and above all, a radical geek. I'm a "geek" because I'm passionate about learning. I'm "radical" because I have the gall to insist that everyone has the ability, and even the right, to direct their own learning.

I think most educators enter the profession because they loved school. That's not my story. I was one of those students that teachers either love or hate. I actually wanted to learn, so I asked questions, I was critical, I corrected, and I demanded work that didn't waste my time, but instead challenged me to be better. I wouldn't tolerate a passive role in developing my own thoughts and ideas. As a student, the traditional system of education was frustrating. When I started teaching, it was unbearably heart-breaking. I couldn't, in good conscience, subject my students to the same dehumanizing experience I had fought through my entire life.

As I slowly gathered courage, I began pushing back. Now I fight tooth and nail against teacher-directed, graded, one-size-fits-all, factory-style education. In its place, I promote schools and practices that help every student develop into fulfilled, productive, life-long learners.

Whether you're an educator, student, or parent, if you're tired of a system that pits teacher against student, and forces teachers to spend their time documenting student failures rather than helping them all succeed, then I'd love for you to join the conversation. Better yet, if you think I'm nuts, if you vehemently disagree, then you're probably my favorite kind of reader. You leave the most interesting comments and really push me to better justify my ideas and consider new ones. As Einstein once said, "The world we have created is a product of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking." Let's develop our thoughts together.

Hi Chris, I like your blog! I saw you left me a comment a long time ago about my blog "Loch Ess Monster" asking if it was a play on words in German. I don't speak much German - I do speak Dutch and Afrikaans so I can make out some of it. Loch Ess is a play on my own name and also a joke between me and a friend who catches really ugly fish and names them after me. I know Loch in German means Hole...An Ess in Afrikaans is something you fix shoes with. So I think it might be the lamest play on words ever.
