I just graduated from a small liberal arts college with a music conservatory in Wisconsin, student taught K-3 and high school choir for a semester, worked a couple of part time jobs for 7 months, and will be starting graduate school in the fall at the University of Virginia.
I love classical music, especially opera, and early Baroque vocal music, cantatas and the like. I love to read, especially historical fiction novels. I also love to laugh! Ok...That's all. :)
Not long. I have always journaled and just started posting my thoughts about the challenges, failures, and struggles of life online.
Fill in the blank: "People who like _________ will love my blog!"
People who enjoy contemplating how their identities (deliberately plural) evolve overtime by exploring new or hidden facets of themselves will love my blog. Other people who are just beginning to work towards a master's or doctoral degree may also enjoy reading my blog because it will chronicle my years in graduate school as I flesh out some of my ideas about life, gender studies, and music.
What makes you different from other bloggers?
In my blog about my life post-graduation I explore questions of gender identity in relation to both my personal and academic lives. I am writing about my development as a scholar and I explore the ways in which my intellectual pursuits, which focus on the relationship between gender and musical performance, are in turn shaping my own sense of self, specifically as a woman.
Hi Courtney! I'm writing you, because I've checked your blog and we have some interesting things in common. I received a BA in music performance in undergrad, but got burned out and felt really self-conscious performing....so ended up going to grad school for women's studies directly after graduation...where I am now....struggling to find a thesis topic that will stick. I'm interested in combining a love of music with women's studies, and I've been back and forth quite a bit. I wanted to go the "women in music" route, but was deterred by some professors at the music school. I think I'll be focusing on jazz. However, I wondered if you knew of any resources that you found instrumental in your research journey.
Hey, neighbor. I'm from Minnesota. :) I am also new to 20SB and look forward to checking out your blog. If you're interested, come check out mine: http://josiahsnest.com
Welcome to 20SB! I just finished reading your Musing on success and failure post and girl do I LOVE this: "one facet of success for me would mean writing compellingly and sensitively about issues of gender identity in music, and genuinely situating myself in my writing. I do not want my tone to come across as contrived and I tend to struggle with this in my writing." I CAN"T wait to read more!
