Once you start brainstorming, the ideas come flow pretty easily. There are literally hundreds of magazines and other publications that use freelancers, so you could write about anything, really. I once wrote for a trade magazine that caters to pizzeria-owners! Here's a list of the strategies I use to brainstorm: http://freelanceswitch.com/freelance-writing/50-ways-for-writers-to-find-article-ideas/

And yes, I earn a full time income from writing. A good chunk of that income is from freelance copywriting (catalogues, website copy, newsletters, etc.), but many other freelancers earn ALL of their income from writing articles or supplement their salary by freelancing on the side.

Hi Eric,

I've been freelancing for about 5 years, but most of that time I wrote on the side so that I could build up my portfolio and my contacts. A little over a year ago, I left my full time job to freelance full time, and it's been great so far. I got started by reading as much about freelance writing as I could (blogs, books, forums, etc.) and sending out lots of query letters. Networking, tapping into word of mouth, and building long-term relationships with editors have also helped. I cover a lot of freelance topics on my blog (http://www.urbanmusewriter.com/), plus you'll find links to other resources from there. Hope this helps!
