Hey! I just saw your comment on my page and on the photography thread.
I actually used the Canon Rebel to shoot for a LONG time, and it takes really nice shots. I recently upgraded, but still have it because it shoots larger than my new camera (although the new camera is fancier and faster -- weird, huh?) I definitely recommend it.
As for lenses, it depends on what you're shooting. A good first lens might be a 20-55 or 20-70 mm lens (or somewhere around that) because you get a good wide angle as well as a little bit of a telephoto. Telephoto lenses (70+mm) are best for portraits because they'll fade the background out on a low aperture and don't have the distortion that a wideangle lens does. A 50mm would be good, too, since it's what the eye sees.
The Rebel is a great camera, and I definitely recommend it. It's pretty easy to figure out and you can move up from there.
