Profile Information

Where do you live:
South Carolina, USA
Relationship Status:
It's Complicated
About Me:
More than halfway to the PhD in social sciences and living in the (very) Deep South with the real love of my life - my super-adorable dog who picks out her own clothes (and when she wants to change them) and puts herself to bed (making her significantly more responsible than yours truly)!

I LOVE sports - the Atlanta Braves, college football, the Dallas Cowboys, Liverpool and Steven Gerrard, and the Houston Astros are my favorites.

I can pretty much always laugh at myself and I'm constantly laughing...

In addition to my personal blog, I'm working on making a blog (Psych at Work) that could actually help the world (or something like that) - it's an attempt to combine the world of science with current events and make the science read-able. So mostly it has fewer pictures than the personal blog, but more than those boring scholarly articles.
Website:
http://20somethingrock.blogspot.com/
Other blogs and Social Media:
Science-y Blog: www.psychatwork.com/, Tumblr: http://meldoesgradschool.tumblr.com/
Age:
25
How long have you been blogging:
feels like forever...
Fill in the blank: "People who like _________ will love my blog!"
quarterlife crises, ridiculous adventures, Sweet Dee of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," Liz Lemon of "30 Rock," cute puppies, grad school poverty and heartbreak
What makes you different from other bloggers?
Really? Can't you tell how awesome I am already?!

Some of My Favorite Quotes

“I believe in pink. I believe that laughing is the best calorie burner. I believe in kissing, kissing a lot. I believe in being strong when everything seems to be going wrong. I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls. I believe that tomorrow is another day, and I believe in miracles.” –Audrey Hepburn

“I’m selfish, impatient, and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control, and at times hard to handle, but if you can’t handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don’t deserve me at my best.” –Marilyn Monroe

“For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others; for beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness; and for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone.” –Audrey Hepburn

"Pick the day. Enjoy it - to the hilt. The day as it comes. People as they come... The past, I think, has helped me appreciate the present - and I don't want to spoil any of it by fretting about the future." –Audrey Hepburn

"Dogs are not our whole lives, but they make our lives whole." -Roger Caras

"Among those whom I like or admire, I can find no common denominator, but among those whom I love, I can: all of them make me laugh." -W.H. Auden

"Texas Stadium has a hole in its roof so God can watch his favorite team play." -D.D. Lewis

"This is the final test of a gentleman: His respect for those who can be of no possible service to him." -William Lyon Phelps

“It is my view that the combined hardy attitudes of commitment, control, and challenge constitute the best available operationalization of existential courage. The hardy attitudes structure how you think about your interaction with the world around you and provide motivation to do difficult things. When they occur together, the 3C’s of hardy attitudes facilitate awareness that you formulate life’s meaning for yourself by the decisions you make and that choosing the future regularly, despite the anxiety of uncertainty, leads to the most vibrant life.” -Salvatore Maddi (2002)

Thanks, Melissa! I think sometimes we have to put the Universe in its place and tell it who's boss. Or, you know, distract it with those tootsie rolls ;) Glad to meet you!

Hello Melissa! How are you?

I am now working as an intern for a website named HerFuture.com and it's a link that I think you may be interested in. Basically it's a wonderful tool to create connections and mentoring relationships with likeminded women. It's just very inspiring and I met amazing people there! I'd really appreciate if you check out the website and why not create a profile if you're interested.
If you have any questions about it, I'd be more than happy to answer it :)
Anyway, I'm on the website if you decide to create a profile, so don't hesitate to add me :)

Hey and by the way! I do have a degree in organisational psychology too :)

Well you may have me beat then because when I was working on my undergrad, I partied my ass off for 4 solid years. But now for my masters, I’ve settled down since I’m working full-time and going to school...it makes it a little trickier to function in a drunken stupor. Although it does sound like an interesting challenge. Hmm.

If we are playing who can outgeek who, then I can outgeek you with one sentence...

I'm getting my masters from CMU (Carnegie Mellon University).

It doesn't get anymore geeky than that!

Wow, your roommate did similar work? I rarely meet anyone who even knows exactly what it is that I do for a living, let alone actually knows someone in the same field. And yeah, the new electronic voting machines are really insecure!

Like your roomie, I also do some work for the government - Dept of Homeland Security. Most of my clients are based in Pgh, NYC and DC.
And if you want to have a geek showdown, I say bring it on! I think I can outgeek just about anyone. ;)

It is somewhat difficult to sum up or explain, but the best way I know how to say it is that I do reverse engineering. What that means is that I usually work from the outside in – hack into it. A company may feel their network is secure, but they want to make certain, so they call on me. I will find their weaknesses and security holes for them before a hacker does. I find what needs to be secured or fixed and protect the company from a possible attack in the future. In some cases a company has already fallen victim to an attack, so I am called on to do the clean-up work and prevent a similar situation happening to the company again. Basically, I outsmart “the bad guy”…or try my darndest to. ;)

Geeky, right? And now I probably sound like the teacher from the Peanuts that talks like "mmm waa waa wa".

Actually it does sound interesting. I like psychology stuff. At one point I had thought about majoring in it, but chose a different college major. I did take a couple psych classes though and I absolutely loved Abnormal Psychology! So freaky and fascinating!

I'm not a writer. What makes you think that? Well I write as in blogging, but I don't write for a living. I run a Network Security Consulting business and I actually do work sometimes in an windowless world - I can work on my laptop outside from home. ;)
