As much as I love wine I am far from being a connoisseur. My wine selecting method consists of identifying the 'value brand' section of the store and going with what I know and like. And if I'm feeling adventurous I will pick a wine that has a cool and aesthetically pleasing label, because I was once told that if you like the design of the label it's more likely that you'll enjoy the wine. I'm not exactly sure how that hypothesis was derived but it works (sometimes). Given my primitive approach to selecting wine I'm hoping to evolve into a more educated consumer. So when I spotted this wine guide by Food & Wine I snatched it up quicker than you can say Chardonnay.
But with over a 1,000 bottles of wine mentioned in this book, where should we start? How about with the 'best wines under $20'? Sounds like a fabulous (and inexpensive) place to begin. So we'll be sampling the wines that have been dubbed the 'best' to see if our tasting notes match up with the experts'. However, considering our October Wine of the Month (and all of our other 'staple' wines) did not receive an honorable mention in this wine guide I have some doubts that our pallets are sophisticated enough to fully appreciate the best wines Food & Wine has to offer. But I'm keeping an open mind and I'm looking forward to the many many tasting to come. Cheers!
