The Bloggers With The Most To Say

On the way home from the never-ending visit to “Grandma’s,” my sister and I invited yet another literary game to keep her from falling asleep behind the wheel. The entire tradition of “literary games” originated one late night when we were coming back from a school trip, and we both desperately needed to stay awake, and to keep ourselves from killing the overexcited high school students who were singing off-key (not to mention the fact that we’re both English majors). This one, I am proud to say, originated in my topsy-turvy, darkly creative mind. The name, “Interview with an Author,” is not very creative, I’ll grant you, but at least it’s fairly self-explanatory.

The basic premise is that for an exclusive, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, you are able to ask your favorite author (dead or living) five questions about their life or works. My favorite author, as the entire world probably knows, is Charlotte Brontë; while it’s hard to narrow my questions down to a mere five, I finally did so, as follows.

In your “Biographical Notice of Ellis and Acton Bell,” why were you so harsh upon Wuthering Heights and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall? (I’ve always wanted to know this—it’s basically just my morbid curiosity.)
Did you actually fall in love with Monsieur Constantin Heger in Belgium? (This is a key point in her life for Brontë researchers).
Did George Smith ever propose? If he didn’t, would you have liked him to? (I count this as one question, because they’re interrelated. And yes, this is a purely nosy question.)
In Villette, does Monsieur Emanuel return and marry Lucy, or does he die in the shipwreck? (I’ve always preferred to think that he returned, but I’d like to know for certain what his fate was.)
Of all your novels, who is your favorite character? (A rather trite question, but I’d like to know, just the same.)
So…if you had the chance, what five questions would you ask your favorite author? (Feel free to expand the rules; what would you ask your favorite character, historical figure, etc, etc.)
