A couple of late shifts at BP this week have turned my usual morning tea, into a few hits off the 'ol coffee bean. As I sit here sippin' my java, I ponder in my mind the history of the coffee bean. How did someone discover that you could roast beans and make them into a drink? How much coffee is too much coffee? Can you die from a caffeine overdose? etc....
- On the average, a small, eight-ounce cup of coffee contains anywhere from 65 milligrams of caffeine if it's "instant", to 115 milligrams if it's drip brewed.
- Coffee Has Its Own Designated Holidays: In Costa Rica, it's September 12; the Irish celebrate it on September 19, and October 1 is designated as "Coffee Day" in Japan.
- Coffee can be used to revive house plants! Dump cold coffee into your ailing potted plants, and it will help turn them green and healthy. You can also mix the grounds into your potting soil for revitalization.
- Caffeine is on the International Olympic Committee list of prohibited substances.
- Espresso has 1/3 of the caffeine of a regular cup of coffee. (FYI Nick)
- Coffee beans are really berries.
- Will you can overdose from virtually any substance deemed to be a "chemical," consuming that much caffeine is almost impossible.
- The side affects of caffeine overdose are not pretty.
- Coffee is the most popular drink in the world with around half-a-trillion cups consumed each year.
I could go on for quite awhile, but my mug appears to be empty.
