You see this coat?
It’s just a basic khaki trench, right? Not exactly. Below this plain exterior is this polka dot lining which just so happens to be the inspiration for our master closet makeover.
No, I didn’t paint yellow and white polka dots on our walls. But, I did take the understated boldness of this lining and translate it into what I feel is a pleasant yet subtle surprise when you open the doors to our mini walk in closet.
This is the before. Just your ordinary white closet.
And this is the after. Just like the coat lining it’s unexpected and adds some character and color to our basic beige bedroom.
How’d I do that? This project was actually pretty easy but time consuming. First I painted the trim, shelves and door white (they were pretty dingy and needed a fresh coat of paint). Then I painted the closet walls with my base coat, Sherwin Williams’ Fragile Beauty.
Once that was dry (I waited two days) I measured and penciled in my stripes, which are 8 ½” wide. There really wasn’t any mathematical logic that went into picking the width. I just went with what I thought would look best. Once I had all my stripes drawn out, I labeled the ones that I wanted to paint blue (just so I didn’t confuse myself). Then using my pencil lines as a guide I taped out all of the stripes using Scotch Blue painters tape. To prevent the paint from bleeding I used my hand to smooth out all of the edges to make sure there were no gaps between the tape and the wall.
Finally, using a small roller I painted all the stripes I had marked “blue” with Sherwin Williams’ Balmy. To do the edges along the baseboards and ceiling I used an angled brush to make a straight line. By the time I finished painting it was 1:00 am (
and yes I did have to be at work bright and early the following morning) and I was not only anxious to see the finished product but I also really wanted to go to bed. So, as soon as I finished my last brushstroke I started to peel off the tape and after hours of prep and painting I was rewarded with a nice clean edge.
Despite being a little tired this morning, I'm really happy I tackled this project last night. I love the way the closet turned out. It's just the right touch of uniqueness and style I was looking for to punch up our bedroom. Leave a comment and let me know what you think of our master closet makeover.
