Thank you for at least showing some interest in me and momentairly considering hiring me. Sincerely.

After every interview, you should always send a thank you note or email. This is extremely important. I know some people think this is just something you read on the internet and no one actually does it. Calling, emailing and writing a personal note actually make a difference. My mother told me so! (and others I know who have hiring power... but most importantly Mom.)

The first interview I had in NYC with the Voices of Women project may not be the best situation because they were interviewing 30+ people. However, I still sent a thank you note and even included the information of a book my interviewer said she was interested in.

JOB TIP: Have a book that is interesting, not a bestseller, and relates in some way to the type of job you want in your arsenal of answers for random interview questions. I had no idea I would be asked this question, but after the interview I spoke to my Mom and a good friend and they had both been asked this question before. I couldn't find it on any job sites, so you heard it here first! Luckily for me I was reading a book recommended to me by my Sociology professor called Risky Lessons: Sex Education and Social Inequality by Jessica Fields.

With Dr. Litwin, he said it was between yours truly and one other person, giving me an amazing 50% chance of employment. Because of this, I did not want to wait for a personalized letter to get to him, so I wrote him an email expressing my thanks for the interview and restating my sincere interest in the position. I copied some lines from a thank-you letter I found online (you can find great thank-you letter examples on the VTech career center page linked on the right).

Thank you for the interview Dr. Litwin

Dear Dr. Litwin,

I wanted to write you an email to thank you very much for taking the time to meet with me about the position yesterday. The interview strengthened my interest in the position and joining your staff. I enjoyed learning about your practice and love that it is a small office with a very personal feel--cats and all. I believe my qualifications and experience, particularly my familiarity with your current systems for scheduling, fit well with the job requirements and I'm certain I could make a positive contribution to your practice. As a Behavioral Science major, this position will also give me an amazing opportunity to see my studies in practice.

I would like to reiterate my enthusiasm for the position, it is just the sort of opportunity I have been looking for. I look forward to hearing from you once the final decisions are made. Please feel free to contact me by the phone number or email address listed below if I can provide you with any additional information.

Again, thank you for the interview and for your interest.

Sincerely,
Dara Laine

I think it's pretty good, if I do say so myself. Any suggestions if I get any future interviews? Leave me some comments and let me know what you think about thank you letters. Do they work? Have you sent them?

I agonized all weekend because he said he would call me Friday and was only interviewing one other person. I was convinced that he had hried the other person on the spot and that's why he hadn't called me. My friends, parents, and boyfriend all consoled me and told me he would call me on Monday and that I will definitely get the job. I was far from convinced of either and broke down a little bit and had to quickly end a call with my college roommate, at the end of which she asked me if I was ok.

S: "Are you ok?"
D: "Yes, I'm fine."
S: "Are you sure?"
D: "I'm not going to kill myself tonight S, don't worry."
S: "Well that's reassuring."

Well, at 11:58 pm September 20th I recieved an email from Dr. Litwin. And you will NEVER guess what it said. Heck, even I wouldn't have guessed it. And trust me, I thought of just about every possibility but this one.

Response from Dr. Litwin

Hi Dara,
sorry about the late response - I was down in Delaware for the weekend. and thanks so much for your note. it was appreciated, since I have been finding managing the office and fitting in interviews a bit challenging the past 2 weeks flying solo. but on the other hand I have had several really good interviews so it's hard to sort that out. I hope you understand it takes time since I'm hoping the next person will work out for an extended time. last interview should be this coming Tuesday, which was later than I expected. speak with you soon and have a good week! -pjl

What does this mean?! Seriously!!! At the end of the interview with Dr. Litwin, he said he thought I was great and was happy that I had the Behavioral Science background. Ok, ok. I know he's just being nice or whatever because we're in an interview, but he also said he was glad I knew how to use the google interface. Great, great. But then he said that the downside is that the office is small. (uhh...) So in my thank you note I made a point to say that I liked the small office. Ok, great, fine, whatever. Still doesn't make sense of this email. I thought he wanted to hire some ASAP, so if he really wanted me he wouldn't be interviewing people still, right? I also thought he was getting back to me on Friday, clearly there was a miscommunication there. And the fact that he's had several really good interviews. I could burst into tears right now.

To sum it all up, things are looking pretty down in the prospective job world, yet again. Back to the endless craigslist searches and the various other websites I use to find potential employment. I think I may just have to work for minimum wage somewhere. I'd still be able to make rent if I worked full time on minimum wage, but just barely. That's why I've been looking for places that pay a minimum of $8/hr. Unfortunately, restaurants won't hire me, offices won't hire me, and clearly I haven't been able to get my foot into the door of what I actually want to do. I guess Wal-Mart is my last beacon of hope in this job market. Unless of course I decide to take those nude photos. If something good is going to happen to me, please happen now.

Happy Hunting,
Dara Laine
