Every once in a while, a song will come along that just hits you in the exact right spot. Maybe it’s the wailing, emotional melody that perfectly matches your broken heart. Or it could be the “fuck you, I’m stronger than that,” anthem that picks you up and puts you back on the track you know you were meant to walk. Right now, the song that’s on continuous repeat is Matt Nathanson’s, “Modern Love”. I mean, any song that compares love to a taco truck is bound to grab your attention right? This song basically says everything about this crappy dating situation that is the twenty-first century. Sure, us “modern” women don’t really want our grandmothers’ kind of love. We want to be equals in our relationships; we want to be able to make our own choices without the forced guilt or shame. We’ve made ourselves strong and decided that we don’t need a man in our lives, we just want them. They’re nice to have but not completely necessary. We are women, hear us roar. Or has Matt Nathans on sings, “Watch your back, I’m nobody’s girlfriend!”
But what have we given up to get to this point? This strength was supposed to let us do what we wanted, not force us to accept less than we’re worth. Because while woman have become Amazons, men have become, well, boys. “They make promises like politicians.” Every girl has heard, “I’ll call you,” only t realize a week, two weeks, later that he never intended to pick up the phone. And they think we’ll fall for those same “store bought words” over and over again because they know that someone will even if we don’t. And despite the bouncy, catchy melody that accompanies those words, it really is heartbreaking that so many good women have gotten used to liars. And it’s true, this modern love is not enough. It’s just a stupid taco truck that will be here, gone tomorrow and leave us feeling unfulfilled.
