The Bloggers With The Most To Say

How do you mix old with new? Having been built in 1915 our house definitely falls in the category of old. But when old also means outdated and worn it’s time to bring in the new. But how do you do “new” while staying true to the original style and character of the house? By keeping it classic.

So, while I love this modern kitchen and can appreciate the contemporary design of the living room, we are going to try and pick elements we feel are timeless. Like our new hardwood flooring for the living and dining room and the granite countertops (yes we’re back to granite!) for the kitchen. With that said, we still want to make design choices that are practical and fit our lifestyle and budget.

For example, on the second floor we are forgoing the traditional hardwood flooring and installing *gasp* carpet. I can’t tell you how many jaws have hit the floor when we reveal our plans to put carpet over the original hardwood floors. But the simple fact is, we like carpet. And it’s not like we’re installing wall to wall pink shag carpet throughout the entire house. I just want to be able to step barefoot out of bed in the morning and land on soft plush carpet, rather than a cold unforgiving hardwood floor. Or wake up in the middle of the night and walk straight to the bathroom without fumbling for my slippers.

So we’re continually working on finding a happy balance between maintaining the charm and tradition of the past while living and enjoying our house in the present.Leave a comment and let me know if you’ve ever had to make compromises in your design decisions when it comes to style versus practicality.
