The Bloggers With The Most To Say

For as long as I can recall, it seems like outlandish baby names and the Hollywood crowd go hand in hand. Every time a star is expecting, I cannot wait to find out what they will call their offspring (in actuality, I highly anticipate learning anyone's baby name). Normally with the Tinseltown crew, you can expect something unusual that will not be found in a baby book. In fact, I recently created a game for a baby shower where you had to match the crazy baby name to the crazier parent. Pilot Inspektor (Jason Lee) and Bluebell Madonna (Geri Halliwell) were some of the favorites.

Most people fall into one of three categories in terms of what type of names they like; traditional, modern, or off-the-wall. I find myself fitting into the modern category. I tend to like names that are unique, but normal enough that people won't be questioning your choice behind your back. Currently, the trend is last names as first names. I love it! I hope I can talk my husband into a name like Harper, Jackson, or Parker one day.

Nicole Richie recently made headlines by naming her baby boy, Sparrow James Midnight Madden. I have to say I really enjoyed the name she gave her daughter, Harlow. Sparrow is just too far-fetched for me. At least he will grow up in a town where that sort of thing is expected. In case you were wondering what the name meant, the people of US Weekly analyzed it for us:

"It's an interesting choice for a son because you really can't tell if it's a boy or a girl," she says. "Something we've started to see is parents being much more open to giving their sons names that have a feminine feel or are unisex."

The middle name, James, is "conventional," Satran points out, "in case they want to go by that later in life." (Harlow's middle name is the traditional Kate.)

Midnight, like Harlow's second name Winter, denotes a time or season, which is often found in African culture, Satran says. "Some of the earliest African names in the U.S. were Afternoon, Easter, Christmas and Friday," she says. "You have to think there's some pattern [with Harlow and Midnight]."
