I'm a newbie urban gardener and I'd like to get a feel for who else keeps gardens nowadays and why. Any comments would be immensly appreciated!
Why did you start a garden (for food, a hobby, aesthetic appeal, etc.)?
How old are you?
Where do you live and what type of environment do you live in(urban, suburban, rural, etc.)?
How long have you been growing fruits, veggies, herbs or flowers?
What is your favorite thing about gardening?
Ah! Yes, I just started a container garden this past weekend--I live in NYC and it's the first time I've had a terrace. I planted a beautiful herb (oregano, thyme, basil, sage, mint) planter to start, plus a tomato and pepper plant. Then the evil birds decimated them. If anyone knows a solution, please pass it along. Or gardens in NYC and can recommend some hardy plants that can survive the winter.
You know, I always thought gardening was kinda lame, but I've become obsessed with starting my own herb garden. I have a really great balcony so I'm thinking that's a really easy project to tackle.
I live in a townhouse with no garden but I would love to have one. At the moment its pot plants - I especially like growing herbs to cook with. I'm having problems with greenfly at the moment though. It wouldn't be so bad if it was outside but I don't like the idea of having a colony of bugs living in the house!
- Art Ravels - if you want to try the outdoor herb planter thing again you should get some canes and netting. Stick the canes in the ends of the planter and then hang the netting over it - that should help keep the birds out.
Love gardening . I own the building my apartment is in, it has a small bit of land only enough for flowere a cople of rose bushes and plants that climb like Clementius. I have some of those hanging tomato plants and some herbs.
I've leased a plot ( really cheap) only a couple of blocks from here for the last two years, this women leases out most of her 2 acre city yard for people to grow stuff. I grow peppers of all kinds, tomatoes, zucchini, mainly with some bush beans. Last year it didn't do as well as the first year because did it I didn't have as much time to care for it, but this year I have three people sharing the plot with me so I hope for a ton of stuff. I usually just eat the stuff raw which is what I did the first year I had it and the stuff came up so well.
